Progress Toward Comprehensive Obesity Care: The Biden Administration’s proposed regulation to include FDA-approved obesity medications under Medicare and Medicaid is a significant step forward in addressing obesity as a chronic disease. This proposal complements past decisions by CMS to provide coverage for intensive behavioral therapy and metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) — bringing our country closer to advancing access to comprehensive care, where metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) plays a critical role as a durable and evidence-based treatment option. While this development is promising, it’s far from final. Advocacy remains essential during the public comment period (closing January 27, 2025). Expanding access to both obesity medications and MBS is vital for treating obesity holistically and improving outcomes across the continuum of care. Let’s continue to push for a future where patients have equitable access to the full spectrum of evidence-based treatments for obesity. Together, we can advance impactful and lasting solutions.
