This Wednesday, I had the privilege of representing the American Society of Landscape Architects - South Carolina Chapter and LS3P ASSOCIATES LTD. at the South Carolina Design Construction Partnership Legislative Reception in Columbia. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with our state legislators, including Blake Sanders, to advocate for our profession.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT! Ashley River Park 2024 Award of Excellence | General Design SeamonWhiteside Ashley River Park, the first major public park in Dorchester County, has established a new benchmark for community parks in the region. Nestled along Bacons Bridge Road in Summerville, SC, this 87-acre site seamlessly integrates open spaces, riverfront views, pavilions, playgrounds, a splash pad, and ecological corridors, fostering a connected network within the park. Overcoming challenges such as extensive wetlands, limited highland, an underground water tunnel, and periodic flooding, the park showcases a diverse ecological pattern. Additionally, its historical significance, rooted in the Revolutionary era, adds a layer of national importance. Since its grand opening in March 2022, Ashley River Park has not only met but surpassed expectations, attracting a staggering 75,000 visitors within the first 5 months. The park’s success is further underscored by the sale of over 5,000 annual passes and the booking of 245 rentals for picnic shelters and the pavilion. This remarkable achievement highlights the park’s undeniable popularity and its positive impact on the community. Its success lies not only in its landscape architectural excellence, but also in its ability to resonate with and enrich the lives of those it serves. SeamonWhiteside provided recreation planning, landscape architecture, and civil engineering services related to the site program and master plan refinement.
