At every conference I've been to over the past two years, there's been no shortage of speeches, press releases, and booths with AI splashed all over. But I've also found no shortage of attendees who are what I'd call curious observers, people who hear "Artificial Intelligence" and wonder "How's it going to impact me?" ?? I'm not talking about my fellow tech nerds who are immersed in AI on a daily basis—more-so those in non-technical roles who are focused on actual healthcare delivery, administration, and improvement on a day-to-day basis. They may be genuinely interested in understanding the tech behind how ChatGPT can be so human-like in its responses, or they may fear that AI will drastically alter the career they've worked so hard to build, but mostly they just want an accessible intro to AI that leaves them feeling better educated, empowered, and prepared for?what AI will bring to our industry. That's the goal of the webinar we're hosting on Tuesday with Primeau Consulting Group. Kristen (Robeson) Borth, MS, RHIA, CHPS and I will be leading a session designed to give those curious observers a foundational understanding of AI in healthcare, with lots of examples of how it has and will be applied. Today, we celebrate Jashne Sadeh ("Jush-nay Saa-day") in honor of fire and the discovery of how to make it.??The Shahnameh—the Persian epic by Ferdowsi—tells the story of King Hushang, who threw a stone intending to kill a snake. The stone missed but hit another rock, producing sparks and enlightening the world. Fire is considered sacred in Zoroastrianism and symbolizes warmth, light, strength, and purity. Additionally, this day celebrates the nearing end of winter and the coming arrival of spring. Sadeh means 100 in Persian, and Jashne Sadeh is observed 50 days and 50 nights prior to the Northern Hemisphere's spring equinox (Norooz). If you've been suffering through cold days and long nights, today you have a great excuse to light a bonfire and spend time with friends and family! The arrival of winter means it's time to celebrate Yalda! ?? Yalda Night (like "Y'all, duh!") is a celebration of the winter solstice, which occurs at 3:20am CT tomorrow in the Northern Hemisphere. Known in Persian as Shab-e Yalda ?? ?????or Shab-e Chelleh ???????, this holiday is observed by Iranians and Zoroastrians all around the world. Yalda marks the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness as the days begin to get longer and spring gets closer. Many will celebrate Yalda by staying up all night to play games, read poetry, and eating bright red fruits like pomegranate and watermelon. Today is a great day, because it's Cyrus the Great Day! Cyrus the Great was the King of Persia and the founder of the Achaemenid Empire about 2500 years ago, which back then was the largest empire to ever exist. Cyrus was a truly groundbreaking leader; he liberated Babylon, developed what some call the first charter on human rights, and inspired Thomas Jefferson and other later leaders. To this day, the name Cyrus is very popular for boys in Iranian and Zoroastrian families. The picture here is what is believed to be Cyrus's tomb at Pasargadae, the original capital of the Achaemenid Empire located in south-central Iran. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and amazingly, the tomb was built to be earthquake-resistant when first constructed thousands of years ago. We've been thinking a lot about HTI-2, the new proposed federal regulation out of ASTP (formerly ONC) that introduces all kinds of new data exchange functionality into the health IT certification process. For literally 99.99875% of the world, today is just an ordinary, secular day. But for a group of Zoroastrians—mostly ones of Indian and Pakistani origin known as the Parsis—it's actually New Year's Day! Navroz (pronounced "No rose" and also spelled Norooz or a bunch of other ways) is the new year in one of the three calendars in Zoroastrianism. That's right, there are three calendars and three New Year's Days within a single Gregorian year. Like any New Year's, today is a day of celebration with family and your community. Parsis will cook a sumptuous meal and prepare elaborate, colorful chalk drawings outside of their front doors. To all those who observe this holiday, we wish you Navroz Mobarak! Happy New Year! Yes indeed, it really is a new year. The first day of spring?means it's Norooz (rhymes with "no blues"), the traditional new year among Zoroastrians and within the Iranian, Afghan, and other Central Asian communities. Norooz has been celebrated since ancient times and is the most important holiday in Zoroastrianism. Like any other start to a new year, you typically celebrate Norooz with family and friends, giving thanks and sharing warm wishes for a prosperous new year. Pictured below is one of the traditions of Norooz, a Haft Seen table. "Haft" is the number seven in Farsi, and "Seen" (?) is a Farsi letter analogous to the letter "S" in English. A Haft Seen table includes seven items that begin with Seen, such as garlic (seer), grass or sprouts (sabze), and apples (seeb). People will often add coins, painted eggs, a mirror, and a prayer book or religious text?to their tables. Each item is meant to symbolize something important or meaningful, such as love, prosperity, strength, and self-reflection. Families will visit each other's homes during Norooz to celebrate and to view the Haft Seen tables. We wish everyone Norooz Pirooz (Happy New Year)!
