This is Emily, just back from my trip to Denver for my third Winter Institute, the annual national bookselling conference! Thank you to my amazing staff for taking care of the store while I was gone. The absolute best part of this conference is the networking, connecting with everyone from other booksellers to publisher reps to author friends new and old. I talked with dozens of inspiring people whose stores are doing great things and received amazing feedback from booksellers and publishers who see the work happening here in Elk Grove. However, while our trade organization has consistently stood with queer people and taken steps to respond to Black bookseller concerns, they have been silent about Palestine. We activated last year to address this, yet silence still reigns. None of us are free until all of us are free. As a queer-owned business, we cannot embrace their allyship while allowing them to remain silent about genocide. Booksellers from across the country collaborated again this year to demand that the ABA speak against genocide and the silencing of resistance. When our representative read our statement, over half the room stood in support. You can see this in our recent collab Reel on our IG. Several other booksellers also spoke to restate that the ABA can and must support human rights for everyone and must respond to this with meaningful action.
