More than 85 million people are visually impaired worldwide. Globally, cataracts are the second leading cause of visual impairment and the leading cause of preventable blindness in the developing world. The ASCRS Foundation supports physician education and provides humanitarian cataract surgery in the United States and overseas. Through its programs and partnerships, the Foundation works to maximize the benefits of modern ophthalmology and to treat thousands of patients in need each year.

  • ASCRS Foundation Announces 2025 Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award ??? Last month, the ASCRS Foundation proudly announced the recipient of the 2025 ASCRS Foundation Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award:?Elena Barraquer, MD.?Additionally, the Foundation honored the late?Michael Colvard, MD, (1947–2024) by naming him a co-recipient of the 2023 Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award with his longtime mentee and Namibian partner, Helena Ndume, MD. ? This prestigious award, endowed by a generous gift from philanthropists David and Victoria Chang, honors individuals who demonstrate exemplary dedication to humanitarian efforts with a focus on addressing cataract blindness and disability. Each award includes a $100,000 donation in the recipient’s name to the charitable ophthalmic organization of their choice and formal recognition at the ASCRS Annual Meeting, this year in Los Angeles, California, from April 25–28.? ? Dr. Barraquer leads the Elena Barraquer Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to combatting preventable blindness due to cataracts in developing countries. Founded in 2017, the Elena Barraquer Foundation has provided access to eye health to over 120,000 people in more than 20 countries, performed 25,000 pro bono cataract surgeries, conducted 50,000 medical consultations, and delivered more than 65,000 pairs of glasses. ? Dr. Colvard dedicated over three decades to humanitarian work with SEE International in Namibia, where he worked closely with Dr. Ndume to restore sight to thousands of patients. Beyond his work with SEE International, Dr. Colvard founded the Friends of Vision Foundation, with the mission of helping to eliminate reversible blindness both locally and in underdeveloped countries, as well as to provide food, clothing, and educational supplies to orphaned, disabled, and underprivileged children around the globe.? ? The ASCRS Foundation extends its congratulations to both?Dr. Elena Barraquer?and?Dr. Michael Colvard?for this well-deserved honor.
