ASCE St. Louis Section was organized in February 1888, as the “St. Louis Association of Members of the American Society of Civil Engineers" and has been representing civil engineers in the region ever since! ASCE STL encompasses the Greater St. Louis Metro (Eastern Missouri and five Illinois counties), serving over 1,500 members, five student chapters, and home to dozens of awesome engineering consultants! The ASCE St. Louis Section is a community for civil engineers which provides our members with professional and technical development opportunities, promotes the profession through outreach to the public and future civil engineers, and advocates for safe and sustainable infrastructure. The Missouri Future City Regional Competition is well on its way.?We are so excited to see the creative solutions our 6-8th grade middle school students will present on January 11, 2025, on the Missouri University of Science and Technology Missouri S&T Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering This year’s challenge is to design a floating city!?Students will research, imagine, and design a floating city set approximately 100 years in the future and provide two innovative examples of how their floating city keeps its citizens healthy and safe.?The teams will complete a project plan, write a city essay, construct a model, create a presentation and answer questions from a panel of engineers/STEM minded professionals. We are looking for engineering mentors (register here: https://lnkd.in/gNhEsSUA) and competition judges (register here: https://lnkd.in/gp3e6WiH) Mentors should be available to meet with educators and teams as needed either in person or virtually.?Engineering mentors serve a very important purpose as role models to students who may not have met a “real” engineer before! With the exception of the essay and project plan judges, Missouri Future City Competition judges do need to be available in-person, on-site on Saturday, January 11, 2025, on the S&T campus for competition.?Please plan on spending the majority of the day (8 a.m. – 4 p.m.) with us!?These students will AMAZE you! ?? #TimeCapsuleThursday: The Decline and Legacy of the Streetcar System ?? St. Louis' extensive streetcar system began to decline in the mid-20th century due to several factors, leaving a lasting legacy on the urban landscape. ?? Reasons for the Decline: The rise of automobile transportation and suburbanization led to a decreased reliance on streetcars. The development of highways further accelerated this shift. ?? Last Years of Operation: By the 1960s, the majority of streetcar lines had been dismantled, with the last line ending service in 1966. ??? Preservation Efforts: Today, St. Louis honors its streetcar history through preservation efforts.
