So… you have an sUAS aka Drone application in mind (great!), and you think to yourself “it’s a small drone, let me just ‘kit’ it myself - how hard could it be?” Kindly stop and seriously rethink. Building an airworthy TRL9 aircraft platform takes a long time and requires complete focus - generally 7-10 years... and in any case your IP will be in the mission & software, not the aircraft! Case in point - there’s this small company called Northrop Grumman. They know a ‘bit’ about aerospace and to prove that point built this ‘simple’ product called the B21 Raider (the world’s only 6th gen aircraft). When they needed a small aircraft platform for a new system they were building one would think they will feel confidant to build it themselves. But they didn’t. They went with Ascent AeroSystems - because it’s already at TRL9, complies with NDAA, is manufactured at scale in an FAA Production Certified factory, and has the cost/performance ratio unlike any other commercial platform. The lesson here? The smartest teams are building their missions & payloads on top of scalable & open TRL9 platforms. The alternative is to waste a lot of time and money and still end up with a suboptimal system - because your software/mission will only be as mature & performant as the hardware/aircraft it’s flying on!
