Nearly a year ago, I learned that Wisconsin's Report Card for Infrastructure never had included a chapter on Rail, and the ASCE Wisconsin Section was looking for a volunteer to write the chapter. I said yes immediately, long before my brain had a chance to remind me that not only am I far from an expert on all things Wisconsin Rail -- or more importantly, that writing has never been my strength. By the time my imposter syndrome kicked in, it was far too late to change my mind! I spent hours scouring the internet and reading the many (and thorough) WisDOT led state freight, rail, and crossing safety plans and did my best to capture and summarize the hard work of others across the state in Wisconsin's first Rail chapter because I think there's an important story to tell. It is my genuine hope that by bringing attention to this important infrastructure, we can work together to "improve the grade." The Wisconsin Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers has approximately 2,000 members across the state. The Wisconsin Section is composed of four branches – Southeast, Southwest, Northwest, and Fox River Valley. Our mission is to provide essential value to our members and partners, advance civil engineering, and serve the public good. The Wisconsin Section holds two conferences each year – the fall Annual Meeting and Spring Technical Conference – and these conferences are hosted by the Branches on a rotating basis. In addition to hosting events that offer networking and PDH opportunities, we recognize excellence in the industry through the annual Wisconsin Section Awards, participate in community service, raise funds to provide our local university students with scholarships, and more!
