???????? & ?????????????? ?????? ??????: ?? ?????????????????? - ???????? 2! “?????????????????? ???????? ?????????? ??????’?? ???????? ?????????? ?????? ????????????????????—???????? ???????? ???? ???????? ??????????????????, ??????????, ?????? ?????????????? ??????????.” Following our post last week, we're sharing some ?????? ?????????????????? from the project (to read the previous post, see here: https://lnkd.in/eajyNXA8) ASC Agency worked with partners across Islington to deliver consultations for the Islington Council's #ImagineIslington cultural strategy. This was a genuinely co-created project that asked some of the borough’s most disadvantaged residents what arts and culture mean to them. ?? ???????? ?????? ???? ??????????? Whilst this was delivered across one borough, the findings from the project resonate far beyond. Across and beyond the UK, people are finding a range of barriers accessing culture and creativity, highlighted in the previous post, and arts and cultural organisations can increase and transform participation through measures including: ? Breaking financial barriers: Free schemes, supported trips, and inclusive communication to all ? Bringing arts into communities: Outreach & workshops (such as those in this project) in familiar, trusted spaces - such as community spaces, libraries - unlocks participation. Engaging local community groups is vital ? Staff training and culture change: challenging and changing the discriminatory and stigmatising approach found in some cultural venues ? Empowering diverse leadership: representation from the communities or with lived experience in staff and facilitators inspire trust and authenticity, diversify organisations & provide opportunities. ? Co-creating strategies that evolve with community needs. ? More projects like this!: The co-created, outreach approach adopted for this project worked in identifying local barriers, solutions, acted as a first engagement for many participants, and an opportunity to increase participation Every area will have its own unique barriers, challenges and opportunities. But arts and culture is life-changing when it's accessible to everyone. ?????? ?????? ???????? ????????????, ???? ???????? ???????? ?????????? ?????? ???????? ???? ???? ?????? ?? ?????????????? ??????????????, ?????? ???? ?????????? In 2023, ASC Agency worked with Islington Council and partners across the borough to deliver consultations for the borough's Imagine Islington cultural strategy. This was a genuinely co-created project that asked some of the borough’s most disadvantaged residents what arts and culture mean to them. Through 10 creative workshops, ASC Agency engaged over 80 participants — many with lived experiences of homelessness, poverty, and housing inequality. Facilitated by individuals with similar experiences, these sessions revealed profound insights into what 'culture' meant to people, the barriers people faced accessing creativity and culture, what makes arts and culture truly accessible. ?? ?????? ????????????????: ?? A brilliant example of #ArtsForSocialChange ????
This week Legislative Theatre came to Groundswell - Homelessness Charity UK - and as Katy Rubin said, this one was an adventure! The first #LegislativeTheatre event with Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, council staff & residents in temporary accommodation gave a great performance, based on their real stories of the challenges living and working in TA in the borough. As always with Legislative Theatre, this was just the beginning - as the audience got to work identifying the systemic issues, creating policy changes- and a Policy Team including senior council staff, councillors, residents and advocates from Home-Start Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham made key commitments to drive them forwards. Bravo, as always to Katy Rubin, Sharon Clint, LaToyah Gill, Joanne Brown and the Groundswell team for getting us there and making this happen- and of course all the residents and staff involved. #LegislativeTheatre

'It secured global media coverage...it mounted pressure on the insurance sector...It also...brought an injection of joy, hope and inspiration at a time when many of us feel despondent in the face of the climate crisis and countless other injustices.' A brilliant blog from Maya Mailer at Mothers Rise Up & Our Kids' Climate for Sheila McKechnie Foundation highlighting wonderful and powerful examples of arts and creative tactics for social and cultural change addressing climate change ??
?? Creative climate action for cultural and social change ?? ?? I'm delighted to have written a blog for the Sheila McKechnie Foundation about Mothers Rise Up creative campaigns. It speaks to the power of art, culture and joy (yes, joy!) in bringing people together, sparking the collective imagination about what it is possible and creating change. ?? At Mothers Rise Up, we've done everything from organising a?Mary Poppins-inspired flash mob outside fossil fuel insurer Lloyd's, dropping a banner at Lord’s Cricket Ground and staging a big, family-friendly protest outside Downing Street with a fiddle-playing Prime Minister (see photo) through to 'cake activism' and creating quirky cricket-themed gifts for the cricket loving Chair of Lloyd's. We've inspired people to get involved in climate campaigning for the first time and secured meetings with the top brass at Lloyd's. ?? In my work with the global network Our Kids' Climate, I see how art combined with the emotive power of the parent voice can break down barriers and enable organisers to hold conversations with government officials and fellow parents, in contexts that are otherwise hostile to climate activists. So here's to the power of creativity, art and love in tackling the #climatecrisis! A shoutout to the small but mighty team of women at Mothers Rise Up -Rebecca Ward Lorna Powell Rebecca Wynn Bongi Kellner Claire Stephenson MCIPR Emma Powell and Chryso Chellun - and to all the amazing collaboraters and co-creaters Insure Our Future Global Parents For Future UK Parents for Climate Marcia Walker Sue Tibballs, OBE, and to Climate Outreach and Potential Energy for informing this work with social science research. https://lnkd.in/eTxp44MV
