In this episode of This Week in Surgery Centers, Kathy Wilson, Executive Director of the ASC Quality Collaboration (ASCQC), walks us through her 10-step process for conducting an effective QAPI study. Using a real-world example from a GI center, she shares how her team tackled case cancellations—ultimately reducing same-day cancellations to 6.8%.?Their goal was to get under 10%. Here is Kathy's 10-Step QAPI Process: 1?? Define the Purpose – Why does this issue matter? 2?? Set a Performance Goal – Internal or external benchmarks help guide success. 3?? Plan Data Collection – Identify what you need to track. 4?? Collect the Data – Use reports, spreadsheets, or software to track key details. 5?? Analyze the Data – Identify trends and root causes. 6?? Compare to Goal – Did you hit the target? 7?? Implement Corrective Actions – Revise patient instructions, engage physicians, implement tech solutions, etc. 8?? Remeasure the Data – Track post-intervention results. 9?? Adjust if Needed – Implement further corrective actions if goals aren’t met. ?? Communicate Findings – Share results with staff, leadership, and surveyors. For a more detailed walkthrough, listen to the episode in full on your favorite podcast platform or on YouTube.?

Check out this appearance by our Assistant Executive Director Becky ZIEGLER-OTIS on the HST Pathways "This Week In Surgery Centers" podcast! ??????
Struggling to find new QAPI study ideas for your ASC? In our latest podcast, Becky ZIEGLER-OTIS from the ASC Quality Collaboration (ASCQC), shares how to keep your quality improvement efforts fresh and how to generate new ideas. ? Benchmarking is Key: Use both internal (your own historical data) and external (industry benchmarks) to identify performance gaps.? ? Look Within Your ASC: Your risk management reports, infection surveillance data, medical record audits, and even patient, employee, and physician surveys are goldmines for QAPI ideas. Pay attention to recurring comments in surveys—they often highlight hidden issues. ? Revisit Past Studies: An old study from years ago might uncover new issues due to changes like staff turnover, new procedures, or post-COVID shifts. Continuous improvement isn’t just about new ideas—it’s about re-evaluating old ones, too. ? Tap into Free Resources: Participate in the ASC Quality Collaboration’s free Safety & Quality Assessment (Feb 1–Mar 15, 2025). You’ll get personalized benchmarking reports to identify strengths and areas for improvement. QAPI doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Start with data you already have, stay curious, and keep refining your processes!? #TWISC #QAPI #Benchmarking?
