ASAP/After School Activities Partnerships’ mission is to develop high quality after school activities and resources to empower youth and strengthen communities in Philadelphia. The organization was founded in 2002, by Marciene Mattleman, at the request of City leaders to bring to public awareness the dangers of the afternoon hours for unsupervised youth. Since 2006 ASAP has coordinated four citywide initiatives that engage thousands of Philadelphia youth (grades K-12) each year in fun, enriching out-of-school time (OST) activities and experiences that develop critical academic, social, and emotional skills through a combination of structured programming and informal play: ?ASAP Chess: With 150 clubs meeting weekly and competing monthly, ASAP Chess develops the problem-solving and strategic-thinking skills of more than 2,300 youth. ?ASAP Debate: Through ASAP Debate, over 500 youth in 45 middle and high school clubs explore important issues while building critical reading and public speaking skills. ?ASAP Drama: For more than 950 youth in 27 clubs, ASAP Drama nurtures young people’s powers of expression, teamwork skills and cultural knowledge through participating in group performances and attending professional productions. ?ASAP Scrabble: Through weekly play and citywide events, ASAP Scrabble strengthens the essential building blocks of literacy and mathematics for more than 1,200 students in 85 clubs. Over the last two decades, ASAP has emerged as a leader and trusted collaborator in Philadelphia’s out-of-school time sector. Supported by strategic partnerships with city agencies, community organizations and a broad network of stakeholders, ASAP has served more than 85,000 school-aged youth since its inception. This week ASAP had the immense honor, alongside eight other Philadelphia organizations, of being recognized at the Philadelphia Eagles' A Safer America event for our work to keep youth safe through after school programs amidst a gun violence epidemic. The event brought together Pennsylvania and Philadelphia community organizations, local and state officials, and directors from the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention to discuss the successes and ongoing challenges in the fight to eliminate gun violence. We are very proud to partner with the many organizations throughout the city who are doing excellent work to combat the gun violence epidemic from their own unique areas of expertise, and we are extremely grateful to have received a 2024 Eagles Social Justice Fund grant to help ASAP continue providing youth safe, welcoming spaces that connect them to their school and wider community. ??: The Philadelphia Eagles, ASAP #PhillyASAP #EndGunViolence #Eagles #PhiladelphiaEagles #GunviolenceAwareness

ASAP's Data and Outcomes Committee greatly enjoyed attending the Pew Charitable Trusts' Fund Evaluation Capacity Building Initiative September Learning Summit last week! Staff learned about data visualization best practices and met with our Pew Data Coach to discuss our work to continuously improve the equitable evaluation of our program impact, volunteer participation, and more ? We're grateful to partner with Pew to strengthen our data procedures and frameworks, and look forward to connecting again with our fellow cohort members in January!
Last week we brought together all of our cohorts for The Pew Charitable Trusts Fund Evaluation Capacity Building Initiative September Learning Summit! ECBI participants engaged in conversations and sessions centered around equitable evaluation along with content focused on ongoing learning. The day was filled with lots of reflection and insights! We were grateful to have our keynote speakers, Allen Morris & Elana Redfield, highlight the importance of connecting research and data to community driven policy change. Michael O'Bryan also facilitated a great session on human-centered design during our breakout sessions. It was another invigorating summit and we look forward to hosting the next one in January! The results are in ?? During the 2023-2024 school year, ASAP: ? Served 5,166 K-12 students across our Chess, Debate, Drama and Scrabble programs ? Coordinated 331 clubs that met at 200+ sites throughout the city ? Organized 75 events, competitions, workshops, and performances ? Took 146 students, parents, volunteers, and staff to the National High School (K-12) Chess Championship in Baltimore ?? ? Had four ASAP Debate pairs place in the top 8 at States ?? ? Held our first-ever Scrabble Carnival, attended by 128 students ?? ? AND hosted three Drama showcases for 100+ students to perform established and original works ?? As the school year begins, we’d like to share an important update regarding ASAP’s leadership. Due to personal reasons, Sara Morningstar has resigned from her role as ASAP’s Executive Director. We are grateful for her service. To ensure that operations continue to run smoothly as we seek a permanent replacement, the board has named Christopher Barrett Politan, principal of nonprofit consulting firm Give, Get, Grow, as ASAP’s Interim Executive Director. Christopher brings over 25 years of experience in nonprofit strategy, including a specialization in change management. We recognize that this has already been a year of change at ASAP. However, ASAP has an incredibly dedicated board and staff, several of which have been at the organization for a number of years. Their institutional knowledge and commitment have been and will continue to be critical in us seeing this transition through. In the meantime, ASAP will continue to prepare for the upcoming school year and do what we do best—pivot, adapt, and support our community, even in the face of ongoing challenges. We thank you for your continued support, and look forward to working together to help Philly kids reach new heights—keeping them safe, engaged, and inspired to learn, all year long.
