Rep. Wittman continues to be a champion for the nation’s 57.7 million recreational fishermen,” said Glenn Hughes, President of the American Sportfishing Association. “The America’s Conservation Enhancement Reauthorization Act is tremendously important legislation for fisheries conservation and fishing access around the country. The American Sportfishing Association particularly supports the sections of the bill related to fish habitat restoration, pollution reduction in the Chesapeake Bay, invasive species management, and the protection of traditional tackle. We are excited to see the America’s Conservation Enhancement Reauthorization Act continue to move through Congress, and look forward to its enactment this year.” https://lnkd.in/dX_dYBJG

The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) is pleased to announce that Judge Beryl Howell of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia has upheld the legality of the Harvest Control Rule (HCR) under Framework 17 specific to the recreational fisheries for summer flounder, scup, and black sea bass. ASA was accepted as an intervenor in the Framework 17 lawsuit. “Such measures are essential for addressing inherent imprecision in recreational fisheries data, providing predictability for anglers, and supporting a robust recreational fishing sector.” - Michael Waine, ASA Atlantic Fisheries Policy Director

As the sportfishing industry continues to face uncertainty about anglers’ ability to continue accessing the Atlantic Ocean due to NOAA’s disastrous vessel speed proposal, we are grateful for the leadership of Reps. Carter, Peltola, and the bill’s other bipartisan cosponsors for continuing to push back through H.R. 8704,” said Glenn Hughes, President of the American Sportfishing Association. “This legislation will support technology to minimize the already extremely rare occurrences of right whale strikes by small vessels, while preventing economically devastating vessel speed restrictions from going into effect. We continue to question the value of unenforceable speed restrictions as a viable option, but rather recognize technology to identify whale locations and share that information with boaters in real time as the best way to reduce risk of strikes.” https://lnkd.in/emtNK-K8

Outdoor recreation participation is reaching record levels, yet our growth is threatened by ongoing trade disruptions and the expiration of essential trade programs, such as the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP). Earlier this week, Outdoor Recreation Roundtable hosted a briefing on how to stabilize trade environments to ensure the continued growth of the uniquely American $1.1 trillion outdoor recreation industry. ASA President Glenn Hughes joined the panel of outdoor industry leaders, stressing the importance of fairness in the marketplace, ensuring companies across the globe are on the same playing field and paying their fair share of the associated duties and taxes. Today, we celebrate the advancement of three key pieces of legislation by the House Natural Resources Committee, reinforcing their commitment to the industry, the recreational fishing community and promoting sustainable fisheries management. These bills—H.R. 8704, H.R. 8811 (America’s Conservation Enhancement Reauthorization Act of 2024) and H.R. 5103 (FISHES Act)—are vital for ensuring the health of our fisheries and protecting our sportfishing heritage. “Each of these bills will bolster the $148 sportfishing industry and protect access for America's 57.7 million anglers,” said Mike Leonard, Vice President of Government Affairs, at ASA. “We are grateful to the House Natural Resources Committee and the sponsors of these bills for recognizing the importance of conserving our fisheries resources and enhancing the social, cultural and economic benefits that recreational fishing provides to the nation.” For more information on these key fisheries bills, visit today's news release. https://lnkd.in/exTxV4ar
