The arXiv user Support Specialist reports to the Head of Content and User Support and is an important member of the Editorial and User Support Team, providing information and support to arXiv authors, readers, and moderators. Working in a fast-paced environment alongside a supportive team, the User Support Specialist will respond to routine and emerging questions, as well as screen and escalate complex requests to appropriate team members. This user facing position represents arXiv to our global community of researchers, referring users to relevant policies and workflows and supporting authors, readers, and moderators throughout the arXiv submission process. Today is arXiv's first #GivingTuesday! The first Tuesday after Thanksgiving is a time where we are asked to reflect on all we have accomplished in the past year as we move more fully into the holiday season, as well as express gratitude for those who helped us along the way. arXiv is so grateful to be a part of such a generous community that has helped us grow since our founding in 1991. arXiv now hosts over 2.5 million scientific articles, and our small team handles, on average, more than 18,000 submissions a month (with many months topping out at over 20,000 submissions!) At arXiv, we take our role as an pioneer and advocate of #openscience seriously. When we talk to researchers across the globe, some of whom tell us arXiv was one of their only ways to access the science they needed to do their work or complete their studies, we believe even more firmly that free and open access to scientific research is more important than ever. Over the course of 2023 and 2024, arXiv collaborated with Invest in Open Infrastructure on an intensive 14-month project to support arXiv leadership and governance with a focus on strategic planning and building toward operational excellence. As part of the wrap-up work on the project, IOI held a roundtable conversation with Licia Verde, Alexander Kohls and Stephanie Orphan to discuss the collaboration and arXiv's evolution and mission in the years ahead. arXiv is proud to announce that we have been selected as one of 15 projects in 2024 awarded grant funding by NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration through the NASA Open-Source Tools, Frameworks, and Libraries award program. This award program is one of several funding opportunities at NASA focused on advancing open science practices. Recipients of this grant funding, like arXiv, have been recognized by NASA as #openaccess projects that are integral to the advancement of science that protects our planet and broadens our understanding of the universe. Supporting and maintaining open infrastructures is critical to scientific discovery and equitable access to research across the global science community.
