?? Welcome to Part 2 of our LinkedIn mini-series, where we continue exploring our in-depth conversation with Grant Solem, the community education director at Litchfield Community Education. 2?? Part 2: Overcoming challenges and building a strong team When Grant first stepped into his role, he encountered employee turnover and limited resources. Determined to create a positive and unified team culture, Grant prioritized finding people who shared his vision. ?? What were some early obstacles when you started as community education director? The people who were here when I took the role left within the first couple of months, so I had to hire two new employees early. That wasn't easy; we didn't get a ton of applicants, but now I have the best team. And they've been proving that when you get the right people on the right spot, it makes your job as a director incredibly easy, especially if everybody's rowing the boat in the same direction. It makes your life a lot easier. The three of us are all going in the same direction and have the same plan and goals. It makes it enjoyable to come to work every day. ?? To further strengthen the team, Grant focused on building strong ties across departments. I had a couple of short-term goals regarding creating more efficiencies within our program, and my long-term goal is to create the best relationships with the people I interact with. I had to figure out how to do those two things. [Another] goal was to build a strong relationship between high school athletics and community education. I was able to help bridge that as I coached football, so I worked within the school and got to know the other coaches. That was a strategic relationship I wanted to make stronger so we (community ed) could help out as much as possible with things like helping run youth sports. Arux's first National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) conference was a success — and it certainly won’t be our last! The week was jam-packed with enriching session topics, but our favorite was “5 Steps to Success as a New [Early Learning] Leader” … huge thanks to Anne Laguzza for such a valuable presentation. We’re grateful for the conversations we had at the Arux booth with early learning and after school programs of all shapes and sizes, and we can’t wait to watch you continue innovating ahead of the 2025-26 school year. Here’s to continued growth, collaboration, and progress in early learning!
