For Artwork Archive's Featured Artist Nobuhito "Nobu" Nishigawara, the anticipation of opening a kiln mirrors the deeper transformations at the heart of his work—shifts between memory and material, past and present, Japan and North America. Drawing from his experience as an immigrant, Nishigawara investigates how form, texture, and material hold layered meanings. His work bridges personal memory with material transformation, embracing clay, rocks, and glass—each capable of shifting between solid and fluid states, much like his own adaptability across cultures. "My memories of Japan are like snapshots… still-images without many details. In contrast, my current consciousness (noise in my head) is like a flowing river, seamlessly connecting all the unrelated subjects." Through sculpture, Nishigawara plays with refined and gestural qualities, surface treatments that both conceal and reveal, and raw, unprocessed materials that hold visceral layers of his experience. ?? • This artist creates art that connects viewers with the quiet beauty of intricate details. @stephblondetart Artwork Archive's Featured Artist Steph Blondet Blondet began her artistic journey after a health scare in 2021, using creativity as a form of healing and self-expression. She built a professional art career celebrating the harmony between simplicity and complexity—transforming the canvas into a space where texture, movement, and emotion take shape. Approaching each piece intuitively, she uses texture, lines, and composition to tell her story. Rough, irregular textures mirror life’s unpredictability, while flowing curves reflect its highs and lows. Through the interplay of light and shadow, her work explores contrast, resilience, and our collective experience. While deeply personal, her work carries a universal message: we are inherently connected through our experiences. Her art serves as a quiet yet powerful reminder of resilience, transformation, and the beauty in opposing emotions. ?? • Growing up in Fort Valley, Georgia, Featured Artist Alfred Conteh's love for comic books and cartoons evolved into a deep passion for visual arts. From an early age, he knew he was meant to be an artist—an absolute truth that shaped his journey. That foundation led him to become classically trained, expanding his practice beyond painting to experiment with sculpture and three-dimensional formats. But beyond technique, Conteh sees his work as a platform for addressing urgent social issues within Black communities. "I make work for my people," he says. “It’s problematic when our greatest aspiration is to seek accolades based on what the dominant culture sees worthy of awarding you,” Conteh explains. “We have to see value in ourselves.” His art is a call to action—an effort to "to appeal to African Americans and encourage them to be stewards of our culture and history.” Through his work, Conteh pushes past conventional narratives, offering a raw, layered, and unfiltered look at Black life in America—one that is both deeply personal and undeniably powerful. ? You can view Alfred Conteh's full portfolio on the front of our Discovery page all week this week. • "We can slow down and speak to ourselves. We can do that through art..." —@oriestudio For Nigerian artist, curator, and researcher Amarachi Okafor, art is a space for connection, dialogue, and communal exchange. Practicing consistently since 2002, and inspired by people, Artwork Archive's Featured Artist creates sculptures, paintings, and art events that speak about a troubled, happy, and responsible society. She transforms materials—both traditional and commonplace—through stitching, fastening, tying, and binding, exploring how we impact and "use" one another, nature, and the structures around us. Her internationally recognized work spans continents, conversations, and communities, from exhibitions across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas to curatorial projects that document and archive the voices of established African artists. With numerous global residencies and awards, she has played a pivotal role in shaping contemporary art discourse in Nigeria as both an artist and curator. Through material transformation and social engagement, Amarachi’s art challenges us to pause and question the actions of humans in society: "How do our actions determine our condition and affect our relationships? How do we ‘use’ nature and one another? What is the path to this Paradise?" ?? Discover Amarachi Okafor (@oriestudio) on the front of our Discovery page all week. Plus, stay tuned as we share more insights from the artist on her creative practice, the power of documentation, and her advice for fellow artists. ?
