? MAGAZINE RELEASE ? As we head into a lovely Pacific Northwest summer, Oregon Symphony is wrapping up their season with three spectacular concerts. This month they are proud to present the World Premiere of a piece by acclaimed composer Giancarlo Castro D’Adonna, who makes his home here in Portland. Then, they finish their classical subscription series with a program featuring a solo by Principal Bassoon, Carin Miller. And their final performance of this season brings John Malkovich to Portland for a light-hearted program that pits music critic against the classical tradition, confronting and challenging the (mis)perception that classical music is losing relevance. ? MAGAZINE RELEASE ? This month Oregon Symphony is packed with incredible concerts, including three powerful classical programs. First, Music Director David Danzmayr leads the Oregon Symphony and Portland State University’s Chamber Choir in a program featuring Mozart’s gripping Requiem. Later in the month, violinist and Artist-in-Residence Simone Lamsma returns to Oregon to play Bruch’s poignant Violin Concerto No. 1. Then they wrap up April with Beethoven’s lighthearted and witty Symphony No. 8. Also this month, they celebrate the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s iconic Dark Side of the Moon album with an electrifying symphonic arrangement of some of the band’s greatest hits played by their own Oregon Symphony musicians. Then, we present the mesmerizing Japanese percussion group Drum Tao, celebrating its 30th anniversary. And the final concert in the Music For Families series offers an enchanting journey to a world of Wands and Wizards. ? MAGAZINE RELEASE ? From Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour (creator of the Off-Broadway smash hit White Rabbit, Red Rabbit) comes an audacious new theatrical experiment (March 30 - May 12). Each night at @portlandcenterstage, a new, unrehearsed local performer joins the playwright on stage, while the script waits, unseen, in a sealed box... Touchingly autobiographical yet powerfully universal, NASSIM is a striking theatrical demonstration of how language can both divide and unite us. Portland Center Stage at The Armory also presents Coriolanus (April 20 - May 19). Famine threatens Rome and hunger fuels the tensions between the country’s elite and the deprived masses. As civil unrest stirs political upheaval, the war hero Coriolanus is driven to defend and then destroy his own country. Shakespeare’s rare and unique tragedy will be fueled by a dynamic female and non-binary ensemble, and a muscular, movement-focused staging. This modern translation updates the Bard’s language while lifting the story’s core — and reminds us that democracy is fragile and always worth defending.
