If you've been searching for a job in the arts, you might have noticed that there are significantly fewer job postings on job boards as compared to a year ago. What's going on? Here's the reality: The average number of applicants per open position has exploded in the last year, and many of those applicants are what we term "Serial Applicants" - those who will apply to any open role, regardless of their qualifications or experience. This has caused major headaches for arts organizations, who typically don't have the resources to equitably comb through 300+ applications for a single opening. The solution that these organizations have turned to? Post the job solely on their website. Yes, this is what's happening. Many organizations have begun to move away from posting their openings on job boards, and the only place you'll see their openings listed is on their website. Searching for an executive or senior leadership role? That's where it gets even more complicated. If an organization is using a search firm, it is unlikely that the opening will be listed on the organization's website, and many search firms do not post openings on job boards. You'll need to get to know the top search firms in your specialty and make a habit of checking their websites, signing up for their email lists, and following them on LinkedIn. So what can you do? First of all, make a list of organizations that you'd like to work for and set aside 15 minutes each week to visit the careers page on their website. Set aside another 15 minutes to research other organizations that should be on your list. Are you searching in a certain geography, in one particular genre? Focus your research there. And don't stop checking the job boards! There are so many fantastic roles still being posted and your dream job might be hanging out on Arts Admin Jobs or Musical America Worldwide and others. The program provides support for BIPOC arts administrators who are at the threshold of taking their next leadership step. It pairs them with more seasoned leaders in the opera field who can serve as coaches and advocates. Three incredible panelists, Carlos García León, Jaime Sharp, and Paula Wilson spoke to their experiences as leaders in the field and painted their vision for the future. We encourage everyone to follow their work and stay engaged in the conversation! Session Recap: According to Pew Research, “Generation Z represents the leading edge of the country’s changing racial and ethnic makeup.” With new needs arising, how can arts organizations prepare for the next generation of Black and Latine leaders? Making up nearly a quarter of the workforce, a study conducted by Advisory Board for the Arts found that Gen Z seeks job flexibility, a commitment to diversity, organizational transparency, and room for advancement more than previous generations. In this panel, speakers discuss strategy around kick-starting a career, the needs of emerging administrators, and the active role employers play in advancing the future of the field.
