To inspire and engage students IN and THROUGH the arts.
关于我们
Arts for Learning's mission is to inspire and engage students IN and THROUGH the arts. We connect learning and the arts through culturally-rich, interactive, student-focused performances, workshops, residencies, and virtual learning. Motivated by our belief that the arts are central to a well-rounded education, we provide arts-integrated programs to help pre-K to 12th grade students build academic and social-emotional skills. Our artists—musicians, dancers, and storytellers—use their art forms as teaching tools, helping to reach learners who struggle with traditional methods of teaching. We prioritize our services to under-served students in Title 1 schools; those with intellectual or physical disabilities; and those with parents in the military.

Every year, we honor the life and legacy of former board president Marty Einhorn, who died in 2021 at the age of 63, with a memorial performance provided at no cost to a school. ? This year’s program was held Friday at Norfolk Public Schools' PB Young Elementary. We’re pretty sure Marty would have been clapping and singing along if he’d been there to see Dino O'Dell take kids on a musical journey to all seven continents. ? Marty was inspired to play the trumpet after watching a Young Audiences’ performance many decades ago in Norfolk. Following his death, an A4L board subcommittee decided to use the contributions made in Marty’s memory to underwrite an annual school performance and small stipend for the school’s music educator. On Friday, A4L board member Heather Karasow Smith presented a check to music teacher Amber Hentley for use in her classroom. We were honored to have Marty’s sister, Wendy Brodsky, and his mother, Lois Einhorn, attend the concert, along with a number of board members and the school’s principal, Candiase Driver. ? Pictured from left to right in group photo: A4L board president Michael Geller, board members Debbie Blankman and Linda Dennis, PB Young EELC site coordinator Lisa Paisley, Wendy Brodsky, Lois Einhorn, music teacher Amber Hentley, board member Judy Gutterman, principal Candiase Driver, and Dino O'Dell in front. #memorialconcert #tributetoMarty #musiceducation #inspireandengage

Arts for Learning Virginia is mourning the loss of Charles Cooper, beloved husband of longtime board member Minette Cooper. Pictured is Charles at our 2017 gala fundraiser with the Virginia Symphony. ? ? Interim CEO Anna Green, current and former board and staff members, and former executive director of Young Audiences National Richard Bell gathered yesterday for Charles’s service in Norfolk, a heartfelt tribute to his memory. Charles’s father, Dudley Cooper, was our founder. Our organization exists today because of the Cooper family’s vision and unwavering dedication to the Hampton Roads community. ? Holding Minette and the entire family in our thoughts. Please read Charles’s obituary for more about him and a life well lived. https://lnkd.in/gGHPhV2c

We’re happy to welcome Jackie Adonis and Ayan Harris to our team. As program assistants, they’ll support our many workshops, residencies, and professional learning opportunities. Jackie is an Arts for Learning teaching and performing artist, a Coastal Virginia Wolf Trap teaching artist, and a soprano with the Doorway Singers. Ayan serves as director of festivals for Hampton University's Student Film Organization and founded the HBCU Film Network to support Black filmmakers at historically Black colleges and universities.

Major kudos to the Williamsburg Area Arts Commission for today’s forum: “Marketing on a Shoestring Budget.” It’s a topic relevant to most nonprofits and most definitely to Young Audiences / Arts for Learning Virginia. (We do NO paid advertising, so we find other ways to get the word out about our impact on children’s lives.) ? Stephanie Heinatz, CEO and founder of Consociate Media, did an excellent job explaining the elements of storytelling and detailing marketing strategies. Thank you to WAAC, the City of Williamsburg, Virginia, and all who worked hard to put together this forum. ? (A special pleasure of the forum was the opportunity for A4L’s communications consultant and former employee, Cindy Willett Sherwood, MSJ, to connect again with Robin Noel P., WAAC's outstanding liaison to Arts for Learning.)

For the third year in a row, the Hampton Roads Community Foundation has generously supported IDEAL (Intentional Designs of Expression in Artistic Languages) as we launch in Norfolk Public Schools, Portsmouth Public Schools, and Virginia Beach City Public Schools next week. The foundation’s dedication to this initiative has made a lasting impact, bringing students together from across the region and providing them with the incredible opportunity to showcase their artwork at the Chrysler Museum of Art. Seeing their creations displayed in such a prestigious setting is an unforgettable moment of pride and inspiration! As the lead funder of this three-year initiative, HRCF is owed our deepest gratitude for making this amazing experience possible year after year. Thank you for championing young artists and the power of creative expression! #IDEAL #StudentArtists #HRCF #ChryslerMuseum #ArtsMatter #CreativityInAction #ThankYou
