This past Sunday, we had the opportunity to hear former presidential speechwriter Terry Szuplat speak at the Marine Biological Laboratory as part of its Falmouth Forum lecture series. It was a homecoming for Terry who grew up in Falmouth and is currently in the middle of a tour promoting his first book, "Say It Well." Terry, who recently appeared on our Creative Exchange podcast (listen here: https://lnkd.in/evKGNmR) shared details about how the community he grew up in nurtured his talents and gave him the opportunity to pursue his dreams of one day writing speeches for an American president. It was an uplifting talk and a reminder of the positive impact so many of us can make — parents, teachers, community leaders, and our peers — in the development of children and supporting them in their interests and passions.

We'd like to wish a happy belated birthday to the illustrious Bob Staake who was kind enough to sit down with us for a wonderfully inspiring episode of our Creative Exchange podcast which you can listen to at https://lnkd.in/eYmER7F6. The talented Staake, who has illustrated multiple covers for The New Yorker and illustrated and written nearly 80 children's books, shared with us this nugget in our conversation: "I don't have a favorite illustration. There's many that I feel good about. There's far more that I feel bad about. But I always say my favorite cover, my favorite illustration is the one I do tomorrow." May this be a year where Bob creates art that continues to be better tomorrow (and the next day and the next day)!

Motorcycles, paintings, and sculptures! Our Arts Foundation Patrons had an opportunity to take in all three last night during a behind-the-scenes look at the Cape Cod Museum of Art's current exhibits. We've proudly helped fund two of those exhibits — a retrospective of Sarah Holl's artwork and the Cape Cod Open Sculpture Invitational. The third features 30 incredible motorcycles, some dating as far back as the early 1900s. Many are part of the impressive collection of Arts Foundation supporter and Patron David McGraw who joined us tonight. We want to extend a special thanks to Barbara Corcoran for sponsoring the event and giving our Patrons the chance to enjoy these must-see exhibits.

With the Massachusetts State Primary in the rearview mirror, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod is looking to engage the public in the November election by holding a Meet the Candidates Night with the two candidates for the Plymouth and Barnstable Senate seat on Wednesday, September 25th, 6-7:30 PM. WCAI-FM’s Mindy Todd will moderate the discussion between State Representative Dylan Fernandes (D) of Falmouth and State Representative Mathew Muratore (R) of Plymouth. We're excited to be kicking off our 7th season of the Creative Exchange Podcast with Terry Szuplat, who spent nearly eight years as a speechwriter for former President Barack Obama. Terry's dreams of becoming a presidential speechwriter were planted here on Cape Cod, as a young boy who was captivated by the speeches of our country's 35th President, John F. Kennedy. This week, Terry's first book comes out, "Say It Well", in which he shares the lessons he learned from his time crafting nearly 500 speeches while in the West Wing. In this episode, Terry talks with host Julie (Larsen) Wake about the thrill of writing his first presidential speech as a college intern at American University, what it was like to work for President Obama, and the tips he has for anyone interested in becoming a better speaker.

Massachusetts College of Art and Design is not only one of the nation's oldest art schools, it's the only publicly funded art school in the United States. And next month, we're excited to welcome its President Mary K Grant, PhD to our Creative Exchange Conference. She'll kick off the day in conversation with our Executive Director Julie (Larsen) Wake, a MassArt alum. As to the importance of artists to our world, Dr. Grant had this to say, "They are creative problem solvers and make our communities more interesting, and bring us together during challenging times.
