Exactly a decade ago, as #women, #mothers and #daughters, we gathered with Sandra Macías del Villar (then Program Officer at the Global Fund for Children) in Washington, DC, to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child. We read the #book, Extraordinary Girls, authored by Maya Ajmera, Olateju Omolodun, and Sarah Strunk; participated in hands-on activities for the launch of Lilijim: My Alphabet Book (with proceeds benefiting girls’ education in Turkey); and learned about the inspiring work of the Girls Gotta Run Foundation, which empowers Ethiopian girls through running and education. ?? ?? Today, 119 million #girls worldwide are still out of school*. #Gender-#equitable #education is crucial for reducing disparities, fostering social and economic development, and creating a more #inclusive society. While sound is made visible and sand may look beautiful in this #art form, human induced sand and dust storms have catastrophic effects, impacting 334 million people globally. Did you know that 25-50% of #global dust storms are caused by human activities? ?? These storms cause major health problems, increase #desertification, #deforestation, and reduce #biodiversity and land productivity. They also disrupt economies by closing airports, offices, and schools, and destroying crops. According to the World Health Organization, seven million people die each year from poor #air quality caused by sand and #dust #storms. Here's how we can all help: ?? Recycle ?? Use energy-efficient tools like energy-saving bulbs and appliances ??♂? Drive less ?? Stop overgrazing and overusing water ?? ???? Ahead of World Population Day, let's reflect on our impact on the environment. Our land, water, and air are vital for survival, yet #population growth is straining these resources. ?? According to the #UN, our global population has grown from 7 billion in 2011 to 7.9 billion in 2021. By 2030, we expect 8.5 billion, 9.7 billion by 2050, and 10.9 billion by 2100. This is driven by increased survival to reproductive age, rising fertility rates, urbanization, and migration. ?? The #art by obstetrician-gynecologist and public health doctor Richard Grossman depicts the #global challenges of #overpopulation, symbolized by the entire US population squeezed into a sardine can*. We must act to reduce our carbon footprint and create sustainable environments. Developed nations contribute 85% of the carbon footprint, while developing nations struggle to address #climatechange due to resource constraints. Here are just a few tips where we can all make a positive change: ?? Reduce our #carbonfootprint by lowering our thermostat in winter, raise it in summer, unplug unused appliances, use energy-efficient bulbs, low-flow showerheads, recycle, use public transport, cycle, drive efficiently, buy local food, limit meat consumption, and choose responsibly made clothing. ?? Implement #sustainable systems by using #ecofriendly products, passive solar architecture, cool roofs, energy-efficient appliances, and upgraded insulation, while ensuring high-efficiency electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems, and fostering a culture of #sustainability at home, school and our work places.
