AIRIE immerses artists in the natural world, enabling new stories about our relationship to the environment
关于我们
Artists in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE)’s mission is to empowers artists to explore our relationship to the natural world. We do this by curating a rich artist in residency experience in Everglades National Park, a subtropical wilderness and endangered UNESCO World Heritage site, and deploying AIRIE fellows for public impact in partnership with environmental and community organizations. AIRIE operates a residency program for visual artists, writers, choreographers and composers in the Everglades National Park so that those creative professionals may gain experience and insight into this fragile unique wilderness, thereby becoming ambassadors for its appreciation and preservation in ways that make the outdoors a place of belonging for all.

AIRIE’s “Ebb + Flow” installation is part of Making Home: Smithsonian Design Triennial, and now, we’re proud to see it included in the accompanying book, "Making Home: Belonging, Memory, and Utopia in the 21st Century." This book brings together artists, designers, and scholars to explore the idea of home, and how it is shaped by culture, environment, and history. “Ebb + Flow” contributes to this dialogue by honoring the human communities and ecosystems that have long called the Everglades home. The installation reflects on the Everglades as a place of belonging, resilience, and ongoing change, considering a worldview that transcends human influence. “River of Grass", a film by 2017 AIRIE Fellow, Sasha Wortzel, is a beautiful tribute to the Florida Everglades, offering an ode to its past and present, told through the prescient writings of Marjory Stoneman Douglas and those who today call the region home. The film features archival imagery blending with present-day scenes to create a collective voice that calls from the waters of the Everglades herself. We’re proud to have AIRIE featured in the credits of this incredible work. If you missed its screening at the True/False Film Fest in Columbia, Missouri, make sure to stay tuned for future opportunities to watch this film. #AIRIE #AIRIEverglades #EvergladesNationalPark #RiverofGrass #AIRIEFellows #Art

As part of our #BlackHistoryMonth series, we’re excited to highlight Ania Freer, 2022 AIRIE Fellow and an artist whose work explores identity, cultural memory, and resistance. During her AIRIE residency, Ania created "Kaa-Ha-Yut-Le", a video portrait that connects the natural environment of the Everglades with ancestral stories. She spent time with Daniel Tommie (Bird Clan, Seminole Tribe of Florida), whose personal stories and connection to the land deeply influenced this powerful work. Ania’s work is also featured in "Ebb + Flow," an installation organized by AIRIE, which honors the human communities and ecosystems that have long called the Everglades home. Through video and audio portraits, Ania contributes to the storytelling that expands beyond the Anthropocene, focusing on the relationships between the land, culture, and the environment. #AIRIE #AIRIEverglages #EvergladesNationalPark #Art #ArtInMiami

As part of our #BlackHistoryMonth series, we're proud to spotlight Monica Sorelle, a 2023 AIRIE Fellow whose powerful work explores themes of alienation, displacement, and cultural preservation. Monica, a Haitian-American filmmaker and artist based in Miami, focuses on the African and Latin diasporas in Miami and the Caribbean. During her AIRIE residency, she completed the edit of her debut feature film, "Mountains," which premiered at Tribeca, TIFF, and BlackStar Film Festivals in 2023 and is now streaming on MUBI. In addition to her cinematic achievements, Monica began research on a three channel video titled "Untitled Everglades Triptych," exploring the intersections of prisons, migrant labor, and the ongoing narrative of refuge and detainment, which will be in production later this year. *Photo Credits: Slide 1: Photo by Aaron Kudja Slide 2: Photo by Michelle Lisa Polissaint #AIRIE #AIRIEverglages #EvergladesNationalPark #Art #ArtInMiami
