AST secures permanently affordable spaces for artists to live and work. A program of Vital Arts + Northern CA Land Trust
关于我们
Artist Space Trust (AST) is an innovative national model for equitably securing permanently affordable artist housing and creative space. Utilizing methods developed by the community land trust movement, AST will facilitate an intergenerational transfer of property to prevent losses for future generations locked out by market forces. Artist Space Trust grew from the shared commitment of Vital Arts and the Northern California Community Land Trust (NCLT) to stem the displacement of artists economically vulnerable to rising real estate costs. We believe that community control and ownership are necessary to ensure that local artists have access to safe, affordable spaces to live, create, and share their work. The Housing California conference last week was incredible! ?? As a newly established Community Land Trust dedicated to preserving artist housing in the Bay Area, it was a great opportunity to expand our knowledge and gain insight into how fellow solution-focused advocates are working to establish secure and sustainable housing for all Californians. It was a joy to share the experience with a wide network and also our parent orgs Vital Arts and The Northern California Land Trust. The sense of unity and collaboration was inspiring, particularly on discussions centering on preservation models and uplifting & empowering community voices with lived experience. Feeling grateful for the opportunity to connect with practitioners from all corners of the state, united in our mission for affordable housing. The feeling of coming together with like-minded individuals was truly uplifting! #HousingCalifornia #ArtistHousing #FairHousing #ArtistHousing #CommunityLandTrust #AffordableHousing #CreativeCommunity

??? CLTs: A Legacy of Black Civil Rights Activism ??? Did you know that CLT’s are a legacy of Black Civil rights leaders? The First CLT was founded as a collective farm for black sharecroppers in Albany, Georgia who had lost their homes for the courageous act of registering to vote. Leaders & strategizers for the project included Shirely & Charles Sherrod, organizers for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and Slater King, the President of The Albany Movement and a cousin of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They brought together others from the civil rights movement, including John Lewis, to do this. Slater King asked Bob Swann from the Voluntown Peace Trust, who had helped rebuild Black churches that had been firebombed, to share his ideas of creating nonprofit community groups to hold land in trust. Unfortunately, New Communities continued to experience racism in the process of owning & operating the land, weathering discrimination, boycotts by the white community, and being denied loan opportunities needed to stay grounded during droughts. The land was foreclosed on in 1985. New communities still operates as a non-profit, and is responsible for inspiring hundreds of CLT’s that would follow with the structure they developed for their community.
