"Extreme heat is a public health crisis. But many people underestimate just how much it impacts our mental health," says our associate director Kathleen Euler. Rising effects have a clear impact on people’s mental health. Hospital admissions spike up to 40% on hot days for people with mood disorders. And some medications can increase the risk of heat-related illness, putting even more people at risk. Read our new article to learn how heat affects mental health—and what policymakers can do about it. ?? https://bit.ly/3MfAEM4

Last week, the Biden administration gathered over 100 experts for the first national Summit on Extreme?Heat. Three of our Chief Heat Officers—Jane Gilbert, eugenia kargbo, and Eleni (Lenio) Myrivili were at the summit to discuss lessons learned and insights as the White House makes heat resilience a clear priority. At the Summit, Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi also announced a new national?Extreme Heat Call to Action. It calls upon state, local, Tribal and Territorial governments as well as private sector and non-profit actors to accelerate and scale efforts to protect people from extreme heat now and in the years to come. “This national recognition and prioritization of extreme heat resilience is essential,” says Eleni (Lenio) Myrivili. “We must coordinate national and global efforts to learn from each other, and effectively and efficiently use resources to tackle extreme heat." Global advocate for climate and nature; Extreme Heat | Resilience and Adaptation | Government Innovation |

I was delighted and honoured to spend a day at the #WhiteHouse yesterday attending their #ExtremeHeatSummit! The Summit demonstrated the Biden-Harris administration's leadership on Extreme Heat; the work exhibited was phenomenal! ?? The day started with 10 different US Agencies (NOAA, HHS, FEMA, DOT, HUD, EPA, DOE, UST, OSHA & DOL) presenting a great array of tools and resources developed to tackle extreme heat. National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi opened the session announcing a new?#ExtremeHeatCalltoAction, calling upon all, to use the tools at their disposal to protect people from extreme heat, looking ahead to 2025! ?? Bonus of the day: being with my peeps Jane Gilbert and eugenia kargbo, reuniting with Harleen Marwah, MD MS, and Jad Daley, admiring the leadership and impressive work that my "old colleagues" Victoria Salinas (FEMA) and Jainey Bavishi (NOAA) are advancing! ?? A panel of local government, state and social leaders and practitioners followed, demonstrating the incredible diversity with which extreme heat impacts our lives. A faith leader, a paediatrician, an army officer and the State of Arizona Chief Heat Officer and others, shared their personal experiences, challenges and solutions. ?? Finally, we joined Roundtable Discussions, breaking up in smaller work-groups. The Global Action on Extreme Heat session I joined was an impressive group of people organised by Candace Fatima Vahlsing (USAID). I was totally absorbed in a two-hours-conversation with people deeply invested in realigning and coordinating the architectures of policy and financial systems to tackle extreme heat. I was delighted to reunite with Kathy Baughman McLeod of Climate Resilience for All, and with JuliTrtanj of NOAA and NIHHIS, and to meet Axum Teferra of ClimateWorks Foundation, Ophelie BOURHIS of Agence Fran?aise de Développement, Dylan Winder MBE of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC, and Uday Khemka of SUNGroup. Thank you all for your insights, clarity, and passion! ?? I'm heartened to see the extraordinary expertise and urgency growing around heat resilience. This intragovernmental coordinated effort of the US administration together with the United Nations Secretary General's global efforts following this summer's #CallToActionOnExtremeHeat, are creating the right kind of momentum that we need to tackle one of the most debilitating impacts of climate change! I'm grateful to be at the table, fore fronting the voice of cities and multi-level governance, through the work of the Arsht-Rock Resilience Center and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), as well as the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM)! ? Imagine working when the heat is so intense you can barely catch your breath. You feel the heat radiating from the ground, and the sun beats down, hour after hour. For many women, this is not imagination. It’s their reality. Women suffer disproportionally from climate change and extreme heat. Our Scorching Divide report explores how heat impacts women's labor—and not just their paid work. Globally, women carry a heavier burden of unpaid and domestic work. And heat is insidious, making that more dangerous, too. The report’s findings highlight the urgent need to act on gender equality, especially in this era of global boiling. Read the report to learn more about the very human cost of extreme heat. ???? https://bit.ly/3OxzZrx

?? In 2021, the world got its first Chief Heat Officer. Since she was appointed, Jane Gilbert has advanced significant change in Miami-Dade County. From launching the county’s first #HeatSeason campaign to planting trees, Jane is driving solutions and bringing together key stakeholders to impact change. “There was no one looking at how to address this issue more holistically, and so the idea was to have a position that would break down the silos and look at what are the big health risks and economic burdens associated with extreme heat,” she told Ed Kashi. Read the latest piece from the Smithsonian Magazine to understand how she’s working to "make change happen at the county level." ?? https://bit.ly/3Z1KLMh

?? ?? The world is facing a global heat crisis, and children are on the frontlines. If things don't change, by 2050, almost every child in the world—that’s 2.2 billion children—will be exposed to frequent and intense heat waves. In their new report, UNICEF revealed just how dangerous climate hazards can be for children. https://bit.ly/3TbL7fA Children are especially vulnerable to the effects of heat stress. They sweat less and have more trouble regulating their body temperature, which can put their health at risk. In fact, one study found that—out of every 1,000 live births—16.6 more children died because of rising temperatures. Heat is a clear and growing threat to youth around the world, but we can take steps to protect children from its worst impacts. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/e6PDT8nh.

?? When the temperatures rise, do you know where to go to stay cool? An app is helping Athenians map that out in the palm of their hands. The Extrema Global app was designed to map out public cooling spaces, water fountains, and cool routes, enabling residents to navigate the city safely during high temperatures. Global Chief Heat Officer and Athen's first Chief Heat Officer Eleni (Lenio) Myrivili worked with EHRA science panel member Iphigenia Keramitsoglou, who led the design of the Athens map to enhance public awareness of the city's resources. By combining the expertise of local city authorities with an international network, Extrema Global delivers globally informed heat safety information tailored to local needs.
