Restoration efforts at Good Field Park in Hanover, PA are officially underway! In collaboration with Gannett Fleming, we’re stabilizing 530 linear feet of an unnamed tributary to Plum Creek, which runs alongside the park. This project will include the installation of 930 feet of coir-wrapped soil lifts and 56 feet of imbricated rock walls along the stream bank. We’ll also remove debris from the stream channel and install grade control structures. The goal is to restore the streambed and banks, enhance the overall health of the tributary and its surrounding area. Stay tuned for further updates on this project!

Exciting progress is underway at the Fallston High School High School and Fallston Middle School campus! We’re transforming over 4,800 linear feet of stream to restore its natural flow. Our work includes building two advanced stormwater management facilities, realigning the main tributary to its original course, stabilizing stream banks and implementing various restoration BMPs for effective grade control. Additionally, we’re installing regenerative stormwater conveyance systems and a sand filter stormwater system. With mulch roads in place, erosion and sediment control measures established and tree clearing completed, we’re ready to begin the in-stream work!

Riparian buffers are vegetated areas along streams and rivers that play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. These buffers, typically planted with native trees and shrubs, filter out nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, stabilize stream banks and reduce erosion. They help mitigate flooding by slowing runoff and absorbing water into the soil. Additionally, riparian buffers provide habitats for birds, mammals, insects and amphibians, while also shading streams to cool water temperatures, increase oxygen levels and support aquatic biodiversity. Working with the Baltimore County Department of Public Works & Transportation and RK&K, we successfully restored 3,887 linear feet of stream along the Upper Scotts Level Branch. Completed in February, with planting finished in May, the project replaced an outdated concrete channel with a natural stream channel, incorporating a series of riffles and pools to enhance hydrologic stability. Buried rock protection and buried log sills were also implemented to mitigate high shear stress areas. Trees removed during construction were repurposed as root wads to support grade control and wetland functions, while native species like sycamores, dogwoods and willows were planted to enhance the areas aesthetic appeal. With the Upper Scotts project complete, we’re excited to announce that work on Lower Scotts will begin later this fall!

From mid-April through September, ARRC partnered with C.S. Davidson, Inc., LandStudies, Inc. & the Rail Trail Authority to remove legacy sediment from Oil Creek in Heidelberg Township. The goal was to restore the floodplain to its natural state, as it existed 100-200 years ago. Over the weekend, we participated in the Community Planting Day at Loyd H. Roland Memorial Park in Akron, PA. It was a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the environment by planting native trees and shrubs to enhance local ecosystems. Through our efforts, we helped reduce sediment runoff, improve nutrient processing and stabilize stream banks. Among the species we planted were sycamore, red maple, swamp white oak and black gum, along with native shrubs like red osier dogwood, winterberry and arrowwood viburnum. It was a rewarding experience contributing to a healthier, more sustainable future for the community!
