We see you Arquitina. On the last day of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) annual Women's Leadership Summit '24 in #Chicago we gathered for dinner and realized with great excitement that our presence within the #AIA is growing and growing. The theme of the conference was "Building Resilience". As Arquitina's mission is to go above and beyond the 1 percent of licensed Latina architects in the US, in a space with over 122,000 architects, resiliency is inherently part of our journey in this profession. Representation matters and we will continue to create space so that Latina architects are seen in the profession, heard in the workplace, and effortlessly included in the narrative and storytelling. We repeat, effortlessly included in the narrative and storytelling. Lift as we climb. In this photo are architects defining the cultural landscape of our cities across the country as lead designers & sustainability architects in hospitality, project architects in K-8, project managers in Affordable Housing, code consultants in Healthcare, and 1 Higher Ed tenured professor!, 1 pursuing her phD! Until we meet again...let's continue to lift as we climb ?? #liftasweclimb #representationmatters #inclusionmatters #mentorshipmatters #raisethe1percent #movetheneedle

A national non-profit organization with a mission to raise the 1% of licensed Latina architects in the US.
关于我们
Arquitina is a professional leadership and licensure initiative for emerging Latinas in the field of Architecture. We are multicultural Latinas and we are passionate about architecture and the built environment. There are just over 121,000 licensed architects in the United States, 17-20% are women and 1.7% are Latinx Women. Why the disparity? Women of color experience lack of recognition and representation both in academia and professional practice, which affects career trajectory. While close to 50% of women are earning degrees in Architecture and earn licensing requirements 1.2 times sooner than men, women only represent about 17% of firm principals and or partners. A 2019 NCARB report shows that non-white candidates are 25% more likely to fall off the path of licensure. This is due to disparity in wages, promotions and recognition. Racial and gender diversity shows an improvement along all early career stages. However, the numbers indicate that Latina/x women remain under the 1% of licensed architects. Although the exact number of Latina/x Women is unknown, it is clear that we contribute and advance the profession as architects, engineers, planners, construction managers and sustainability professionals. Arquitina was created on an ethos of “lift as you climb”. Mentored by Latina/x Architects and allied professionals that support equity and inclusivity in the architectural profession, Arquitina candidates can receive the mentorship, encouragement and resources necessary to clear the path of licensure, and pursue a successful career in architecture. "To have an Architecture profession that serves everyone, we must include everyone." (Arquitina agrees ??) That is why the The American Institute of Architects (AIA) created NEXT TO LEAD, a Leadership and Professional Development Program to support association leadership for ethnically diverse women aspiring to be leaders in the AIA. In a national call for applications, 3 of 18 participants are Arquitinas: Ana Orosco, Oksana Ramos, AIA, NCARB, and Veronica Pochet. The 10 month Program is designed to enhance the participants association leadership acumen, give voice to relevant topics affecting women in the workplace and the profession, and refine their leadership skills. Adelante Arquitinas! ????????????

This future architect loves working on projects from the past! Michelle M. is a first-generation Honduran American and the first woman in her family to earn a degree. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Architecture in 2020 and her Master of Architecture in 2023, both from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Currently, she's an Associate at Klein & Hoffman in Chicago, a firm specializing in the investigation, repair, and replacement of masonry facades, roofs, windows, and curtainwalls. She works on innovative solutions for addressing issues such as deterioration, moisture and water infiltration, and safety hazards. Her role involves maintaining the integrity and character of historic and modern buildings alike, ensuring that each project respects the original design while enhancing its durability and functionality. Favorite buildings: the John Hancock and Casa Batlló? Favorite architects: Zaha Hadid and Antoni Gaudí? Favorite architectural style: Spanish Colonial architecture and mid-century modern Arquitina will help guide you to the ARE finish line. Let's do it Michelle!
