We at Arpexas (Scotland) Limited are pleased to be working alongside EVMEDS and BODIT to bring technology-driven solutions to animal healthcare and management in Nigeria. With the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this project focuses on improving real-time livestock monitoring through the #farmershands app. This technology enables farmers to track the health and productivity of their dairy cattle remotely, allowing for better decision-making and more efficient herd management.

#CTLGHAnnualMeeting2024 is underway! I have been publishing in Gates Open Research for several years now and find it a very accessible and convenient journal to deal with. They have just this month introduced the requirement to submit for a preprint on VeriXiv before acceptance by GOR. Our paper on aspects of the FMD vaccine market in Nigeria was published yesterday as one of the first cohort of papers to go through this route. My colleague Dr Adebayo Sopeju of EMMSAR in Nigeria led the work and is first author.

It's good to see papers emerging that link animal health to emissions. Yes we can target methane production directly by novel treatments and technologies but improving animal health by improved husbandry, disease control including vaccines has the potential to reduce emissions by up to 25% or so according to current consensus.

Precision Livestock Farming Event at Harper Adams University

Arpexas partners with Gates Foundation to Enhance Livestock Health in LMICs I’m pleased to announce that Arpexas has just signed a new contract with the Gates Foundation to evaluate certain technologies to improve livestock health and productivity in lower and middle income countries (LMICs).?Two of the projects are continuations of our previous contract which began in 2020.?The first was to assess how high-quality foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccines could best be made available in Nigeria.?Over the past 3 years we have been working with the National Veterinary Research Laboratory in Vom, Nigeria towards a fill & finish approach along with an international vaccine manufacturer.?In pursuing this we have also carried out studies of disease and vaccine market awareness in the country and found these to be very low.?We held a very successful workshop in Abuja last year to help build that awareness and attract support for distribution of vaccine.?This project is continuing in the current contract and I will say more about that in a future post.?The second project is to assess the value of aids to cattle fertility management in African countries and in India using both cow-side diagnostics and cutting edge digital technologies.?If anyone is interested in hearing more, please get in touch.
