Monitoring airborne microbial contamination is essential in controlled environments, and the choice of sampling method can vary. There are two common sampling methods. Active Air Sampling - This method uses an air sampler to collect a known volume of air onto a nutrient medium, allowing for the precise measurement of colony-forming units per cubic meter (cfu/m3) of air. With results that align with regulatory guidelines, active air sampling provides a clear, quantifiable assessment of microbial contamination. Passive Air Sampling- Using settle plates left open to the environment, passive sampling relies on the random scattering of airborne microorganisms falling onto the culture medium. This method is generally simpler and more cost-effective, however, tends to show lower cfu counts than active sampling (e.g., 43 cfu vs. 17 cfu). For environments requiring stringent microbial control, active air sampling remains the preferred method due to its accuracy and regulatory compliance. However, passive sampling can still serve as an excellent supplementary tool for routine monitoring. ?
