Biodegradability testing is crucial for both base oils and lubricant additives to ensure they break down safely in the environment, meet regulatory requirements for EALs and for performance. Common tests include: ? OECD 301B – A "ready biodegradability" test that measures CO? evolution and is widely used for lubricants, base oils, and additives. ? ASTM D5864 – Evaluates lubricant biodegradability through CO? evolution in an aerobic environment. ? ASTM D6731 – Assesses biodegradability by tracking oxygen consumption in a closed respirometer. Lubricant biodegradability testing can be challenging due to poor solubility and other factors. With complex formulations and lengthy test timelines, choosing the right testing partner is essential. Aropha expert and co-founder Travis Johnston will be at Lubricant Expo North America teaching how AI and automations can be used to drastically reduce lubricant biodegradability testing costs and accelerate time-to-market. Did you know? Biobased and biodegradable aren’t the same… Biobased products are a great way to reduce a company's environmental footprint, but companies should take into account how they break down too. A product made from renewable materials should aim to break down responsibly, but that’s not always the case. While there are several options to ensure end-of-life sustainability, one that typically coincides with biobased products is biodegradability - but how do you ensure products will biodegrade? Aropha’s ready biodegradability tests rapidly provide the data needed to verify biodegradability of chemical substances. Faster testing = faster certifications = faster paths to market for eco-friendly products. We’re celebrating biobased innovations today for USDA National Biobased Products Day, and every day. Ready to start your biodegradability testing? Contact us. #biobased #NationalBiobasedProductsDay #biodegradable #biodegradability
