It’s World Mental Health Day! Started by the World Health Organization (WHO), this annual awareness day promotes the understanding of mental health issues and mobilizes efforts in support of mental health. Aropa is proud to work with several clients whose work supports the mental health of the communities they serve: Believe in Me Empowerment Corporation (BIMEC): BIMEC has a 20+ year history of supporting youth and adults in New Haven, especially those who have been impacted or affected by incarceration. In order to meet their goal of reducing recidivism, their support services include case management, counseling, self-help groups, housing and employment education and referrals. Refugee Welcome Collective (RWC): RWC offers community sponsorships and training programs to refugees and community sponsors across the United States. They work closely with resettlement agencies, sponsors, and refugees themselves to develop programs that have the biggest impact on refugee integration. Solar Youth: Solar Youth has served the youth in our community for over 20 years. Solar Youth provides a free after school program that focuses on leadership development and community service projects in three low-income neighborhoods in New Haven. More recently, Solar Youth has launched the Zine Project, which is a program for high school aged youth to use the power of artivism. Artivism is the use of art to promote social or environmental change. This year’s theme is “Navigating Violence in Our Community” — themes often overlap with mental health concerns.
