PATIENCE AND EXPERIENCE MAKE A DIFFERENCE Our firm does a great amount of investigative work assessing and water testing exterior wall and window systems. Leaks are sometimes difficult to identify, but the source of the leak must be identified first in order to find a solution to correct it. It is sometimes found quickly while other times, it may take several hours. An example of this follows: I was completing a water test on a curtainwall system in San Diego on a midrise building, working my way up the wall per ASTM 502 nozzle testing protocol and finding no leak issues. This was strange because the user indicated that the curtainwall system leaked during rain events. The Contractor assisting me and I took a break for lunch and came back, and amazingly, the lower floor window head was leaking like a waterfall! It took time for the frame to fill up with enough water to overflow and express itself. Moral to the story: Water testing is not all science and protocol; it is based on experience and knowledge of conditions. Patience is a key component.
