The Army’s Theater High Altitude Area Defense Project Office, part of the Program Executive Office for Missiles and Space, delivers the first mobile launch vehicle for the THAAD System to Lockheed Martin, March 20, 1995. Built by OshKosh Truck Co, the palletized loading system for the planned mobile interceptor employed a 10-wheeled truck. The ceremony, held at Lockheed’s facility in Huntsville, included a demonstration of the off-load and re-load capabilities of the system. The first THAAD flight test occurred one month later in April. #TBT

Beware Catfish! Cyber criminals love to impersonate military personnel, especially high-ranking service members. During their visit to the 1st Space Brigade last week, NATO Military Committee members received a demonstration of how Army space integrates with the 4th Infantry Division ground air and ground forces to provide close space support to multidomain operations in large-scale combat scenarios. The visit highlighted how Colorado Springs-based military organizations support the lethality and effectiveness of the NATO alliance and can empower Allies to develop capabilities in the space domain. https://lnkd.in/eRfUJ7W4

During the second and final intercept test of the Exoatmospheric Reentry-vehicle Interceptor Subsystem on March 13, 1992, a one second delay was programed into the flight sequence to improve data collection. Constructed of surplus Minuteman second and third stages, the ERIS interceptor incorporated a long-wave infrared scanning seeker, a data processor and flight divert attitude control propulsion motors. Launched from an underground facility on Meck Island in the Kwajalein Missile Range, the ERIS correctly detected the target, a Minuteman I, distinguishing between the nose cone and a decoy, and selected an aimpoint for the intercept. As a result of the sequence delay, however, the interceptor flew between the target and the decoy. The valuable information gathered from this test program was incorporated into both the ground-based interceptor and the theater high altitude area defense interceptor. #TBT

Deputy Secretary of Defense William H. Taft IV concurs with a Defense Acquisition Board review of anti-satellite programs, March 6, 1989, resulting in kinetic energy and directed energy ASAT systems approved for Milestone 0 - program initiation. Based upon their role "leading the ground-based interceptor development activity under the aegis of the Strategic Defense Initiative," the Army was designated the interim lead service for a joint program office for surface-based kinetic energy weapon development. Headed by BG J. Morgan Jellett, the office was a part of #ArmySMDC predecessor’s U.S. Army's Strategic Defense Command. The Navy provided a deputy program manager while the Air Force "would be the lead service for a single comprehensive space surveillance and battle management system to control all ASAT capabilities.
