The Balkan Peace Negotiations close in Dayton, Ohio, with an agreement initialed by Franjo Tudjman of Croatia, Slobodan Milosevic of Serbia and Alija Izetbegovic of Bosnia, Nov. 21, 1995. The agreement ending 43 months of civil war in the former Yugoslavia was formally signed in December in Paris. #ArmySMDC’s Battle Integration Center's Spatial Weapons System Analysis was called in to support the U.S. Topographic Engineering Center, one of the major organizations involved in the negotiations with their Geographic Information System and mapping project. Supported by three personnel from Camber Corporation, the SWSA team "[identified] short-cuts and [eliminated] inefficiencies" and then implemented a storage system for the map files and digitized the geographic lines that would define the territorial divisions. These revisions cut the processing time in half. At the conference itself, the team was assigned the task to calculate the territorial percentages of Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia based upon proposed demarcation lines, generate buffer zones around the cease fire lines and the territorial split, and to digitize the proposed trade-offs (i.e. roads, rivers). The SWSA team was recognized for their contributions by MG Philip Nuber, director of the Defense Mapping Agency. #TBT
