Thanks to Mr. Zasimczuk and SCCC 20/21-24 for inviting me along on their Savannah staff ride! So much great discussion about command and control, commanders intent, lines of communication, sustainment and logistics… lessons learned from our past that remain very relevant today. And to stand on the ramparts of Fort McCallister, the background of one of the most famous Signal Corps paintings, just brought it all home!

Yesterday we recognized THE Chief Operator of the first women’s switchboard operator unit. Grace Banker was, is, remains, a legend in the Signal Corps for her courage and leadership, for being among the very first female Soldiers in our Army. I am in awe of her bravery, for answering the call in 1918 and leading those amazing women. I can only hope to live up to her legacy and to continue to inspire future generations of our great Regiment. Thanks to COL (ret) Linda Jantzen for bringing everyone together and keeping the memories of the Hello Girls (switchboard operators!!) at the forefront of our minds.

11th Cyber Bn is leading the way in COTS maintenance. It’s easy to buy new equipment off the shelf, less so to fix it when it breaks. The 11th’s tracking system and sustainment plan are a model on how to do it right!

Today I had the honor of presenting the Distinguished Member of the Regiment (posthumous) award to Chief Operator Inez Crittenden’s family. Chief Crittenden served our nation with distinction in WWI as a telephone switchboard operator, known as a Hello Girl. She succumbed to the Spanish Flu while still deployed in France and is buried in the American Veterans Cemetary, Suresnes, outside of Paris. I also was able to present graveside honors to Juliette Courtial Smith, a telephone switchboard operator who served alongside Chief Crittenden in France. Neither woman, nor any of the Hello Girls were recognized as veterans until 60 years after they were discharged. Juliette Smith was buried without military honors in 1958, despite her courageous and honorable service to the nation, an awful oversight that we were able to fix today. The Hello Girls musical is a remarkable representation of their service, and one of the songs was sung graveside today. “Making history” speaks to the audacity of each of the “girls” and how their service paved the way for women in the Army. It is not lost on me that my service is a direct result of their sacrifices. May we all be as courageous and audacious as these remarkable women!
