Manufacturing the Future of Biofabrication
关于我们
The BioFabUSA program is a public-private partnership between the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI), a member-driven, nonprofit organization whose mission is to make practical the scalable, consistent and cost-effective manufacturing of engineered tissues and tissue-related technologies, to benefit existing industries and grow new ones. Within the last decade, significant breakthroughs in cell biology, biofabrication and materials science have laid the foundation for the large-scale manufacturing and commercialization of engineered tissues. However, the field of tissue engineering remains fragmented and lacks a mechanistic framework through which to translate laboratory discovery into manufactured products. The goal of the institute is to close the gap in focus that inhibits the commercialization and translation of research and development. By removing existing regulatory hurdles, producing scalable, GMP-compliant processes, and establishing a commercial ecosystem, ARMI will help catalyze and foster the development of a new industry.

How many high school students know what a bioreactor is, or better yet, have assembled one? Students from Loren Blake, MD's Biomedical Science II class at Salem High School's CTE Center have been learning about bioreactors, cells (the induced pluripotent variety), decellularization, and a variety of other topics related to biomanufacturing as part of the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI) | BioFabUSA's project-based learning program, BioTrek. Today, students were able to access the state-of-the-art lab equipment at the University of New Hampshire-Manchester's Biotechnology Innovation Center, where Lab Operations Manager, Raymond Miller and Student Ambassador, Andres Monsalve gave them a tour of the facilities and gave them the opportunity to assemble bioreactors. Experiences like this, relevant experiments in the classroom, and the support of passionate educators and industry stakeholders are the key to inspiring the next generation of students to pursue careers in the life-changing biofabrication industry that is growing in the ReGen Valley!
