When you think of casinos, you think of Las Vegas. But when you think of sustainability initiatives and renewable energy projects, Vegas might not be the first city that comes to mind. In the middle of the desert, in one of the entertainment capitals, sourcing resources is challenging. Las Vegas became a water reclamation pro, and now, with almost 300 days of sunshine a year, Las Vegas is leveraging solar energy and becoming a powerful case study. There’s a lot to learn from where Las Vegas started in its sustainability journey. Now, MGM Resorts International has developed a 100 MW solar installation to power 11 properties. “Despite a dramatic population increase, water consumption has dropped ‘significantly’... By 2030, 50% of all Nevada's electricity is expected to be generated from renewable resources. The Las Vegas strip in particular has doubled down on efforts to switch to renewable energy. Most resorts developed sustainability initiatives thanks to a 10-year-long 50% property tax abatement programme previously offered by the city (the scheme has now closed). The resorts are also required to comply with the state's standard of deriving energy from 40% renewable sources. ‘Most have exceeded 40%, ’says Velotta. ‘Las Vegas has come a long way in a short amount of time.’ Even though the progress made by Las Vegas's notoriously excess-laden strip may seem impressive (Las Vegas's commercial sector accounts for one third of Nevada's total energy usage), the strip started from a ‘relatively low baseline,’ points out Steffen Lehmann, professor of architecture and urbanism at the University of Las Vegas, Nevada. A study reviewed 13.5 million tweets on climate change by 3.2 million unique users (2018–2021). This study analyzes shifts in public attention before, during, and after the pandemic. It was uncovered that attention dropped during the pandemic. Daily climate change-related tweets dropped sharply by 58% in the 2nd quarter of 2020 to an average of 6,603, compared to a peak of 15,914 daily tweets in 2019. In 2021, average daily climate change tweets recovered to 2019 averages at around 13,564. ??What this tells us is that climate change is a growing and staple issue in the human psyche. Is climate change impacting the choice to have children? 33% of surveyed young adults cited climate concerns as a factor in having fewer or no children, reflecting the depth of environmental anxiety on future family planning. As climate change's impacts become undeniable, so too does its effect on personal decisions, particularly those related to parenthood. A recent study introduced the Climate Change-Related Reproductive Concerns Scale (CCRCS), a tool developed to quantify climate-related anxieties influencing reproductive choices. "These findings underscore the pervasive influence of climate change anxiety and its related impairments on individuals' attitudes toward reproductive behavior concerning climate change. Climate change anxiety is increasingly recognized as a significant psychological phenomenon, encompassing a range of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses to the perceived threat of climate change. Our findings suggest that individuals experiencing higher levels of climate change anxiety in terms of cognitive and functional impairments are more likely to exhibit eco-paralysis—a phenomenon characterized by feelings of helplessness, overwhelm, and inaction in the face of environmental challenges.
