Community is traditionally defined as a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. However, it is so much more than that. Community involves support, access to resources and networks, commitment, engagement, and collaboration with others to make an impact. Through this, we can overcome so many things. Earlier this month, members of #ACPD, ACFD, ACSO, and Paul Davis Restoration transported over 1,600 donated essential items to Jimmy and Jeans Family Entertainment & Arcade in North Carolina to help communities affected by Hurricane Helen. Jimmy & Jean turned their family business into a supply hub and have facilitated providing food, clothing, supplies and mental health counseling to the community. Their efforts have assisted Ashe, Alleghany, Avery, Buncombe, and Watauga counties in North Carolina; Grayson County in Virginia; and Johnson County in Tennessee. The generosity of our community in providing these donations, and their unwavering giving-spirit is a testament to Arlington County. We are excited to congratulate Officer Scott and Officer Battaglia on their graduation from the Option 5 Lateral Academy last week! As they enter Field Training and acclimate to policing at #ACPD, they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience from the previous agencies they served. Both of these officers are engaging and eager to get started, and we are so happy that they chose the community of Arlington to serve and protect. Laterals, like all of our patrol officers, benefit from working the equivalent of a 37.5-hour work week with 4 and 5 days off at a time. They also receive a hiring bonus of up to $25,000 and pay commensurate with years of experience, up to 10 years. New officers, without experience, start at $68,503.50 and receive a hiring bonus of $15,000. Thinking outside the box... Many seniors in college will be hitting the midway point of their final year soon. It is coming to the time where they will start to look for jobs in their field of study and either they will be happy with the choices available to them, or they may find themselves struggling to find something fulfilling. What many don't realize is that it is not always necessary to look for job postings that require their exact field of study. Many organizations are stronger when they are made up of people with varied education and experience. ACPD is one of them. Many people are familiar with this photo of the American flag being draped over the side of the Pentagon by fire and rescue workers on September 12, 2001. What many people don't realize is that the Pentagon is actually in Arlington County, VA. 23 years ago, the events of September 11, 2001, forever altered our police department, and the lives of so many people. Many Arlington County Police officers who responded to the Pentagon on that day and in the days following have since retired, but some remain serving our community. As ACPD and the rest of the country pause to honor those lost tragically on that day, and in the days and years that have followed, we will #neverforget .

Integrity is often defined through a John Wooden quote; "The true test of a man's character is what he does when no one is watching." Recently, Fairfax County Police Department presented Corporal Naessens with a Community Service Appreciation Certificate for superior community service in the interest of public safety. On July 14th, Corporal Naessens was off-duty driving through the Seven Corners area when he observed two Fairfax County Police officers struggling with a non-compliant suspect. Corporal Naessens exited his vehicle, identified himself as an off-duty officer and assisted the Fairfax officers in controlling the suspect so he could be taken into custody. Corporal Naessens’ quick actions to assist fellow officers demonstrate his commitment to ensuring public safety, both on and off-duty. Corporal Naessens is one of many individuals who are drawn to this line of work and for whom the instinct to act, both on and off duty, is ingrained. Helping others, just because it is the right thing to do, is a way of life that does not change based on whether you have an audience. We are proud to have Corporal Naessens as a member of #ACPD and a great example of the kind of public servants that Arlington County employs. Earlier this week we recognized Women’s Equality Day, and this fall will bring the inaugural Virginia Women in Law Enforcement Summit which originated from a partnership between NAWLEE, PWCPD Women’s Mentorship Program, and others. It boasts a variety of workshops, speakers, networking and mentoring opportunities, and will be hosted in Arlington. ? As over 26% of ACPD’s officers are women, we recognize some of the unique challenges female officers will have throughout their law enforcement career.?ACPD heavily promoted this event to our female officers and covered 100% of the registration costs to support their attendance. We are proud to say that at this time there are 15 women from ACPD who will be participating, and the Arlington Sheriff’s Office is sending another 11. As an agency, we pride ourselves in identifying and funding excellent training opportunities for our employees, and encouraging them to not only attend, but work with others to create new programs and solutions for the betterment of everyone. ? May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and each year in May the Washington DC Dragon Boat Festival is held. This year was the 21st year that the Dragon Boat Races were held in DC, but the history of the festival goes back over 2,000 years. The races are held rain or shine and are a great opportunity to meet people from all over, of different ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Since placing 4th in our division in the 2015 World Police & Fire Games Dragon Boat Race, ACPD has put together a team three additional years for the DC Dragon Boat Races. While shiftwork can make it hard for everyone to practice together, and the nature of our job requires the team to be flexible with last minute substitutions, each year that we have competed, we have still improved. This year our team was made up of individuals from every rank, from a new recruit to the chief of police, and also included some family and friends. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Last week, thousands of people from across the world gathered in our area to participate in programs and events intended for remembrance, support, and fundraising. Since 1938, ACPD has lost 7 officers in the line of duty. Each year we hold a ceremony at our local memorial, and then lay wreaths at the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial in DC. Because of our proximity to Washington DC, a significant number of our officers are involved in supporting Police Week events. Our Special Operations Section, Honor Guard, K9, ERU, and Peer Support teams assist with escorts, memorials and vigils, races, and anything else that is needed. This is an emotional week for many. However, it is also a time to celebrate the lives of the loved ones we have lost.
