University of Arkansas Leads $750K Data Science Workforce Initiative The University of Arkansas has received a $750,000 grant from the Arkansas Department of Higher Education to expand the state's data science workforce through a new HIRED program. Led by Karl Schubert, managing director of the U of A Data Science Program, this two-year initiative has two primary goals: expanding the Arkansas Data Science Ecosystem by adding more two-year colleges and creating stackable certificates for workforce upskilling that don't require a full degree. With data science professionals in Arkansas earning $80,000-$120,000 annually, this initiative addresses growing workforce demands. Arkansas State University has been awarded a $99,906 planning grant from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Campus Cyberinfrastructure program to assess the feasibility of upgrading high-end technology on campus. While still in the early stages, the findings from the planning grant will impact A-State’s efforts to expand research opportunities, particularly in high-performance computing (HPC). Student participation will be part of focus groups and a cyberinfrastructure workshop this summer. Fleming also noted that the project could improve student access to campus software systems, benefiting A-State Online students.
