A very special thank you to everyone who joined us at this years Sustainability Celebration themed Green Career Pathways. What should our theme be be next year? Any suggestions ????????????????
What an amazing morning - I’m extremely thankful for all the love and support that #AZSA received at this years Sustainability Celebration. Several of our guests came up to me and commented on how much they appreciated that we had an ALL women in Sustainabilty Panel (shout out Cristina H. , Anitra Pickett LEED AP, MBA, MSUS, MLS , Michele Caporali and Tia Washington, MPA, MNM !) In my remarks I made mention of AZSA intentional partnerships with Title 1 schools, low tree equity score communities, bringing on team and board members that represent those same communities, speaking the language and adding more seats to our table. I am personally thankful for those who have supported me in my own career journey (Holly Kurtz you were on my mind, we missed you!) and this is why our Green Careers Pathways themed event was a necessary conversation that needs to continue. Julie Stiak I cannot wait to see what the Southwest Sustainability Innovation Engine enables for our state and region. We surprised everyone a few weeks back with the news that Arizona conservation icon Tice Supplee was joining our line up. Our conversation about her lifelong career was inspiring for me and hopefully also for others. Ginger Sykes Torres - I can’t tell you how proud I was to share the stage with you and to highlight your career in your introduction especially having the honor to host you as a valued citizen of the Navajo nation. To the Arizona Sustainability Alliance crew - board, staff and volunteers - you guys rock, I am proud of our joint efforts from the early tree planting mornings, the laughs and the continued impact day in and day out…I see each and every one of you and I appreciate your selfless dedication to our mission! Anitra Pickett, one of our esteemed panelists for the 7th Anniversary Celebration, is the Associate Director for the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), leading the Arizona and New Mexico local communities. She began her sustainability journey 20 years ago by building and running an off-grid eco-resort on the Big Island of Hawaii, where 100% of the resort’s power was produced from solar panels mounted on top of recycled VW buses. This hands-on experience in providing water, power, lodging, and food onsite fueled Anitra’s passion for examining sustainability challenges, searching for creative alternatives, and implementing practical, real-world solutions. Anitra delved deeper into the complexities of sustainability problem-solving and green building advocacy during her Master’s in Sustainability Solutions at ASU, which she pursued alongside a law degree in construction and environmental law from ASU’s School of Law. Today, she enjoys combining her academic background in psychology and law to identify pivotal points in systems where education and action can drive the most impact and change. Her work ranges from hosting educational events, working on green building policy at the state and local levels, to inspiring younger generations by exposing them to sustainability knowledge and career opportunities.
