We had a terrific experience at the 2024 Arizona Parks and Recreation Association conference, learning and connecting with industry professionals from all across the state! We’re inspired by all those striving to enrich their communities and provide outdoor recreation opportunities for all Arizonans. Thank you, APRA, for the opportunity for our Grants and Trails manager, Jeff Schmidt, to present about the state and federal grants for parks and trails that our agency administers. If you’d like to learn more about grant opportunities to support outdoor recreation in Arizona or connect with our Grants team, visit AZStateParks.com/Grants.

Congratulations to our park rangers who recently became Certified Interpretive Guides! This training helps rangers share information from their parks about nature and history with visitors in a way that's meaningful, helps deepen understanding, and inspires us all to keep connecting with the world around us. We're proud of our team and their commitment to helping everyone appreciate just how special Arizona's natural and cultural resources are!

We are honored to have received an Environmental Excellence Award from Arizona Forward for environmental education and communication recognizing our Arizona Family Campout Program! This program teaches families camping and new outdoor activities—with all equipment provided, and involves families in a service project with each campout. “We are thrilled that the Family Campout Program was recognized for the important role it plays in environmental stewardship,” said Arizona State Parks and Trails Executive Director Bob Broscheid. “There is so much value in reaching new people who may have never experienced the joy of being outdoors. The program gets them started on the right path toward responsible outdoor recreation, and builds lasting memories as well.” The Arizona Forward Environmental Excellence Awards program is a benchmark for economic and environmental accomplishment. All projects are reviewed based on the sustainability impact to communities, cities regions or the entire state of Arizona. For nearly 20 years, Arizona’s most prominent environmental awards program has recognized exemplary sustainability projects throughout the state.?The Arizona Family Campout Program won the Award of Distinction for Environmental Education & Communication. On this International Women’s Day, we want to take a moment to honor and celebrate some of the incredible women of Arizona State Parks and Trails. These women come from various departments like finance, IT, historic preservation, research, and more, and they make valuable contributions to our agency every day. In total, we have 106 women on our team, including 49 park rangers, 17 park and assistant park managers, and six women on our leadership team. Each of them has a unique story to tell, and they have all come to our agency through different journeys. We are grateful for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to making our state parks and trails better for everyone. Thank you, women of Arizona State Parks and Trails, for being an essential part of our team. Happy International Women’s Day!

Next to her photo is a quote that reads, "Transformation is a beautiful process. Like a wandering river, explore the bends and turns in life and know that you are heading to the place you are meant to be." Her story is underneath, which reads, "Sarah always dreamed of being a public servant. She started a non-profit at 13, served on a youth city council, and as an adult, worked for the Peace Corps, and became a social worker in a rural women and children’s shelter. Finding policy often dictated the work possible, she pursued a master's in Public Administration and served in the Governor’s Office for six years. Sarah believes the best jobs meld passions and skills. She has many women role models, from her family members to women who influenced Arizona history."

A quote next to her photo reads, "My family instilled a love of history and the outdoors." Her story is underneath, which reads, "Nikki Lober grew up in the New Jersey pine barrens playing in the forest and visiting historic sites all over the east coast. Her family instilled in her a love for history and the outdoors, which led her to pursue a degree in Forestry. Her female role model is Juliette Gordon Low, the Founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA. If she could give her younger self advice, it would be to remember that everything is hard until it becomes easy."
    • A photo of a ranger in a cave with mud up to her knees. Her name is Chelsea Ballard and she is the Cave Resource Specialist at Kartchner Caverns State Park. Next to her photo is a quote that reads, "I have many female role models. They have shaped who I am today and believed in my dreams and goals." Underneath is her story, which reads, "Chelsea’s upbringing on a Kentucky farm surrounded by hundreds of sinkholes and caves, including the world’s longest cave, led her to study Karst Hydrogeology at Western Kentucky University. In the following years, Chelsea got involved in organizations related to cave science. Before joining Arizona State Parks as Cave Resource Specialist at Kartchner Caverns State Park, Chelsea worked at Mammoth Cave National Park. Chelsea has had many women role models, from family members to colleagues who have inspired and supported her path in science."
    • A photo of a ranger named Debbie Reinert, Park Manager of Buckskin Mountain and River Island state parks. Next to her photo is a quote that reads, "Continue to work hard; you will go places." Her advice to her younger self: work hard and it will take you places."
