"My birthday wish for my son is that there are new policies, new laws, and more resources for those with serious mental illness, and for their families desperate to help them. People who are as sick as my Justin need involuntary, long-term treatment in comfortable, compassionate, and locked facilities." "As the parent of someone with a serious mental illness, I am desperate for improved public policies and more resources. These are long overdue for the homeless and chemically-addicted mentally ill. After twenty-two years of witnessing Justin churn through homelessness and jails, I humbly ask that our politicians fix our broken mental health system." Thank you Clarissa Cece Crader for bravely sharing your story, "A Dream For Justin: One Mother's Hope For Her Sick Son". CBS News NBC News CNN My son is an example of what sudden onset of anosognosia looks like from a severe psychotic disorder brought on from a combination of unlucky genes ?? and cannabis use since 15. #Marijuana is a drug that is legal and considered “safe” in Massachusetts. Nick was a popular athlete in high school, and now sits in his fixed delusions at age 22 awaiting criminal trials from acts done during extreme psychosis. His psychiatrist claimed he may have incurable bipolar 1 w psychotic features if he smokes marijuana again. It has been over a year since he smoked marijuana but still he suffers from his schizoaffective disorder, a new diagnosis given from his latest mental health facility inside jail after being hospitalized 4 times this past 19 months. He is unmedicated, awaiting sentencing from two open cases, and given probation that he must receive a mental health evaluation or he will serve 14 years in prison from another case. His biggest sentencing is this coming January 21. He is set up to fail, and refuses help from his family or our Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH). Nick belittles acts he has done during psychosis and believes his delusions are real despite professionals and family members trying to convince him to accept medication (because of a side affect of his illness called #anosognosia…he believes he has no mental illness). He receives no medication for his #Seriousmentalillness (SMI) currently. He has never received medication since the onset of his SMI 4 years ago except at McLean Hospital who committed him for 2 months and ordered to take meds. He wants punishment not treatment for acts he believe he did, not acknowledging it was during psychosis. We have no AOT in MA, and misguided civil rights advocates like NAMI Massachusetts & Massachusetts Association for Mental Health defend his “right to fail”, which led to his first ever violent act during extreme psychosis on 12/27/23 (10 mos after McLeans) where he almost killed his father if the police did not pepper spray him to stop. Teens who use marijuana are more likely to suffer psychotic disorders, study finds via NbcNews - https://lnkd.in/eDgUkK5Y “This was an ELEVEN TIMES HIGHER risk; higher than tobacco use correlates to lung cancer. But cigarette smokers still get to live their lives… career, marriage, children… Psychosis disorders can cause severe disability by age 20. Time for a Weed Tax to #treatSMI” - Rachel Streiff Yes, Rachel. We need funds to spread awareness on the dangers of this cannabis induced epidemic. Also, warning announcements on TV commercials, on billboards, packaging labels and the dispensary doors. This could have been someone in your family. Untreated psychosis from cannabis which lasts decades after inhalation, is a national threat we cannot ignore. Among individuals with schizophrenia, an estimated 50% to 80% have a partial or even total lack of insight into the presence of their mental disorder. This condition, known as anosognosia, has also been observed in people with other diagnoses, such as bipolar disorder, major depression with psychotic features, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and eating disorders. The May-June 2023 issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology features two articles on this topic, a commentary by Rachel Streiff, titled “Institutional Neglect of Anosognosia Is a Critical Barrier in the Treatment of Psychosis Related Disorders” and an editorial by Editor-in-Chief Anthony Rothschild, MD, titled “Can Psychopharmacology Do More for Our Patients With Anosognosia?” In this podcast, Ms. Streiff, who as cared for a family member with anosognosia, and Dr. Rothschild discuss their articles with Dr. Julia Koretski, Digital Editor of the journal. The articles and podcast are designed to heighten awareness of the scant research on medication treatments for people with serious mental illness who also experience anosognosia. #Schizophrenia #SMI #Psychosis #Caregivers #CourtOrderedTreatment Rachel Streiff, Crystal Fox https://lnkd.in/e6Zb9VQ7
