Formed in 1985, AHS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing hydrology and water resources research, planning, and development. We not only provide an open forum for professionals to exchange information, but we also support public understanding, education, and training in the science and technology of hydrology and water resources. An important part of AHS’ mission is promoting the responsible use, management, and preservation of water resources in the arid Southwest. AHS is also dedicated to helping establish standards for the practice of hydrology as a profession. To support these goals, AHS funds meetings, scholarships, grants, symposia, and other outreach and (or) educational activities.

Students receive awards for research For more than two decades, Central Arizona Project has been offering our annual CAP Award for Water Research, recognizing excellence in graduate and undergraduate water research. Recently, the top students for 2024 were named. The Arizona Department of Water Resources gave a public presentation last week on the hydrology of the Willcox Basin, which was simultaneously live-streamed via WebEx. Topics covered included water level trends, land subsidence, earth fissuring, and current regulatory frameworks (INAs and AMAs). Unfortunately, the audio quality was too poor for everyone to hear. Are you interested in contributing to a discussion about the core knowledge and skills that should be covered as part of an MS in hydrogeology? If so, please add your name to this list of over 200 groundwater professionals: https://lnkd.in/gb8BWURW In October 2024, UArizona Hydrology professor Ty Ferre will reach out to people on this list to start a community-wide effort to define the core elements of our profession. By January 2025 we will publish these recommendations for review and comment. The goal of this effort is to provide guidance to future students to help them prepare to become groundwater professionals and to groups around the world as they pursue parallel efforts to develop in-person, online, and hybrid educational programs. I hope that you will take the first step by joining the list of your colleagues who agree that we need to come together to ensure that we can fill the future need for well-trained groundwater professionals!
