Arizona Electric Power Cooperative (AEPCO) has been selected to receive $485 million in USDA New ERA funding to transform its power portfolio with major investments in new large-scale solar, battery energy storage, and wind projects. These new projects will benefit 40 electric not-for-profit cooperatives and public power utilities across Arizona and the Southwest. With these new projects, AEPCO expects to reduce emissions by 70 percent before 2031. Patrick Ledger, CEO of AEPCO, emphasized that the U.S. Department of Agriculture's New ERA Program has created a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" for AEPCO and its members to invest in utility-scale renewable energy projects without compromising affordability. "This funding will enhance the not-for-profit, community-based electric utility model and will provide stable and long-term benefits for our rural communities for years to come," Ledger added. Arizona Electric Power Cooperative (AEPCO) has been selected to receive approximately?$485 million to transform its power portfolio with investments in new large-scale solar, battery energy storage, and wind projects that will benefit approximately 40 electric cooperatives and public power utilities across Arizona and parts of the Southwest. Electric cooperatives and public power utilities play an essential role in providing rural areas, including many disadvantaged and low-income communities, with reliable, affordable, and responsible power and energy services. According to Patrick Ledger, CEO of AEPCO, the USDA New ERA Program has created a once-in-a-generation opportunity that will enable AEPCO and its members to invest in utility-scale renewable energy projects without sacrificing affordability.?"This funding will enhance the not-for-profit community-based electric utility model and will provide stable and long-term benefits for our rural communities for years to come," he added. The award was celebrated by Arizona G&T Cooperative directors, managers, rate payors, and staff at an Investing in America Town Hall?with USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack?held on Thursday at Trico Electric Cooperative?newly expanded material warehouse facility in Marana, Arizona. The event also provided an opportunity for senior leadership and staff from the region’s electric cooperatives and public power utilities, labor union and rural community representatives, and state and federal government officials, to hear Secretary Vilsack discuss major new and ongoing initiatives at USDA—including $7.3 billion in new financing for rural electric cooperatives to build clean energy for rural communities across the country through the Empowering Rural America (New ERA) Program.
