We're growing our team and super excited to announce that we've hired a new Director of Philanthropy Katie Thorson Wasson to help us expand our shelter diversion programs, including offering more community-based veterinary and behavior services to prevent animal surrenders, which are at historic highs. For much of our 53-year history, AAWL has been known for its adoption services. While we will continue to find homes for 4,000 dogs and cats a year, Katie will help us raise much-needed funds to expand our reach in historically excluded communities of color like East Maryvale, a tight-knit community made up primarily of monolingual Spanish-speaking Latinx residents. Most community members own pets and consider them as family members, yet there are few accessible, affordable veterinary clinics in Maryvale where they can receive basic pet care. Spanish-speaking veterinarians are even harder to find there, and most people are unsure where to turn for basic information about how to care for their pets. AAWL is trying to change that by working with community members to recruit, train and develop promotoras, provide them with low-cost wellness and preventative services, and improve health outcomes for their pets. Please visit https://aawl.org/posurvey to learn more about our recent needs assessment and how we're leveraging what we learned from community members to make a lasting impact on pets and people. 关于我们
The mission of the Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) is to provide excellent care, protection, and loving compassion for the life of the animals entrusted to us and to take a leadership role in promoting humane values for the benefit of all animals and people. AAWL rescues, rehabilitates, and re-homes more than 4,000 dogs and cats that are abandoned or that have been surrendered by their owners. We do this primarily by rescuing them from other shelters in Maricopa County where they are likely to be euthanized due to the lack of time and resources to care for them. At any one time, our shelter will hold 140 cats and 190 dogs. We also have a foster parent network of approximately 90 families who provide care and shelter in their homes for puppies and kittens that are too young to be adopted, and those animals that are recovering from medical procedures or that need socialization before adoption. AAWL not only adopts companion animals into loving homes, but we also hold a leadership position in the community in education and animal welfare issues.
