Are You Aware of Weight Discrimination Laws? You Should Be. Recently in Michigan, a female rapper was denied a Lyft ride because of her weight. She now plans to file a lawsuit. While shocking to some, this situation highlights a broader issue - many businesses are unaware that weight is a protected class in certain states and cities. Michigan is the only state with a statewide law explicitly prohibiting weight discrimination under the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. Additionally, Washington state’s Supreme Court ruled that obesity qualifies as a disability, providing legal protections against discrimination. Other cities, like New York City, San Francisco, and Madison, also have local protections. Yet, many employers and service providers remain unaware, exposing themselves to legal and reputational risks. This isn’t just about compliance - it’s about fairness, inclusivity, and ensuring that business operations align with the law and evolving societal expectations. As businesses navigate an increasingly complex regulatory environment, HR leaders and HR solutions must proactively educate and protect organizations from costly legal missteps.
