Thank you, Governor Sanders, and all state agencies for leading the charge in the Agency-Wide Holiday Food Drive in partnership with the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance! Running from November 18th through December 2nd, this initiative brings together all 15 state agencies to support local food banks and combat food insecurity in Arkansas. Each agency is collecting non-perishable items like canned goods, pasta, rice, and snacks at their main Little Rock offices. The drive also includes friendly competition, with prizes awarded for categories like most food collected, creative collection methods, best promotional efforts, and enthusiastic participation. This morning the Alliance and Jacksonville North Pulaski County School District hosted a Summer Nutrition Kickoff to celebrate Arkansas's Summer Nutrition programs. Our friends from the USDA Food and Nutrition service were on hand as well as Governor Sarah Sanders, Department of Education Secretary Jacob Oliva, officials from the Department of Human Service, Arkansas Department of Education, other state and local elected officials, state agency child nutrition leaders, school district administrators and child nutrition staff were on had to observe meal delivery at Bayou Meto Baptist Church in Jacksonville. The USDA’s Summer Nutrition Programs provide three ways for students to access healthy meals while school is out. 1) Summer Meals: free meals traditionally served at schools, parks and other eligible locations; 2) Summer Meals To-Go: free meals offered for pick up or delivery in rural communities; and 3) Summer EBT - the new grocery benefit that offers families $120 per eligible child in the summer. The three complementary programs are intended to offer families more ways to help their kids access the nutrition they need through convenient, flexible options when school meals are not available. Bayou Meto Baptist Church serves as a rural mobile meal delivery site, one of several offered this summer by the Jacksonville North Pulaski School District. Operating from Monday to Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., it provides breakfast and lunch meals for pickup. These mobile sites, situated in rural areas, complement the traditional in-school meal sites available during summer school sessions.
