As railroads work to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and meet sustainability goals, biodiesel adoption has increased. To prepare facilities for this adoption, considerations are needed on current infrastructure, delivery, and blending. Glen Smith, Lead Mechanical Engineer, N.E. Region, at Argus Consulting, contributed to a paper on Biodiesel Handling and Blend Recommendations as a part of the Fuel, Lubricants, and Environmental Committee for Locomotive Maintenance Officers Association (LMOA). ?? Fire safety and fuel infrastructure go hand in hand. As we celebrate African-American Scientist and Inventor Day, we recognize Dr. Percy Julian, a trailblazer whose work in chemical innovations continues to protect lives today. Dr. Julian, the first African American to earn a master's degree in chemistry from Harvard, held more than 130 patents for his ?? plant-based chemical discoveries. His expertise in soybeans led to countless advancements in medicine, as well as a breakthrough in fire safety. In 1942, he developed Aero-Foam, a soybean protein-based fire-fighting foam used to extinguish oil and gasoline fires on U.S. naval ships, saving thousands of lives during World War II. ?? Why does this matter today? Fire suppression technology has evolved since then, from protein-based foams like Julian’s to fluoroprotein foams and aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF), which have been widely used in fuel storage and handling facilities. Today, with a growing focus on sustainability, the industry is shifting toward fluorine-free foams (F3) to reduce environmental impacts. At Argus, our work in fuel system engineering includes designing and building infrastructure with fire protection in mind, prioritizing the safe storage and transport of traditional and alternative fuels. Dr. Julian’s pioneering work set the groundwork for modern fire suppression systems, reinforcing the importance of innovation in protecting both people and critical assets.
