??Before dusting off the snow and saying goodbye to winter, we share some of our snowiest student skiing memories. From traversing terrain to braving bumps and even weathering wipeouts, we had a blast skiing the slopes at Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Many thanks to the incredible team and our partners at Syatt for helping Davis Aerospace and Maritime High School students make amazing memories. ???? #therealdavisam #ArgonautCLE

关于我们
Argonaut is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation founded by D. Andrew Ferguson and Douglas McConnell in 2010. Recognizing the workforce shortages and a lack of diversity in the aerospace and maritime industries, they created a combined business/education model that incorporates a project-based learning environment and real-life experiences for high school-aged youth in the city of Cleveland. Our Mission is to build adventurers through immersive learning experiences that challenge assumptions and shift norms for growing empowered talent in aerospace and maritime fields. The corporation’s name was changed from PHASTAR to Argonaut in June 2022; not satisfied with the status quo, Argonaut has developed infrastructure, invested in human capital, and engaged in solid partnerships to propel its growth. The staff has been working diligently to build capacity and implement a strategic plan for expansion and sustainability that will carry it well into the future.

Argonaut is proud to announce that we’ve been awarded $110,000 in funding to support our work in educating, preparing, equipping, and connecting Cleveland students with pathways to the #maritime industry. The funding will support the expansion of our maritime safety programming and offer additional training equipment and opportunities for students at Davis Aerospace and Maritime High School. Through our program, students develop vital skills that keep them safe and empower them with the ability to safeguard and protect our waterways. We are grateful to our partner, the Port of Cleveland, for their support as we work to strengthen our students and the local economy through education, career development, and workforce opportunities. https://lnkd.in/eBQUyhV2

?As #BlackHistoryMonth comes to a close, we are inspired to share the remarkable story of James Reese Europe Jr., the son of the legendary ragtime and jazz composer and second lieutenant with the Harlem Hellfighters, James Reese Europe. ??Born in New York City on February 2, 1917, James Europe Jr. exemplifies the spirit of resilience and courage. Though details about his educational journey are scarce, his service during World War II stands as a testament to his commitment and bravery. ??He sailed on Liberty ships during the war's early years before being selected for officer training school. At the U.S. Maritime Service Training School in Fort Trumbull, Connecticut, Europe was the sole Black American among 30 students in his section—a rare achievement for Black mariners seeking officer training at that time. ?Graduating in March 1945 as an ensign in the U.S. Maritime Service, Europe went on to earn his license as a third assistant engineer and a promotion to lieutenant (jg) in December 1946. ??As the post-war merchant fleet shrank, Europe chose to chart a new course, joining the New York City Police Department and later the Fire Department, where he retired as a decorated lieutenant. His pursuit of knowledge led him to earn a graduate degree in 1975, and he dedicated his later career to helping others as an alcohol and drug counselor. In 1988, his leadership and commitment to human relations were recognized with an award from the Nassau County Commission on Human Relations. ??Black history is a vital part of American history, celebrated through the remarkable achievements of great aviators and mariners who continue to inspire. Through their legacies, courage, innovation, and perseverance we are reminded of the potential to soar above challenges, break barriers, and navigate storms. #ByAirBySea #aviation #maritime

?This Friday, we continue our #BlackHistoryMonth celebration of Black Americans in #aviation & #maritime. Today, we celebrate Willa Beatrice Brown, who became the first Black American woman to earn a pilot's license in the US, along many remarkable achievements. ??Willa Beatrice Brown was born in Glasgow, Kentucky on January 22, 1906. She attended Indiana State Teachers College and later attended Northwestern University, earning her MBA. After graduation, Brown taught at Emerson High School's Roosevelt Annex. She later moved to Chicago and worked various jobs until she was introduced to the Challenger Air Pilots Association, a group of Black American pilots, by one of its founders, John C. Robinson. ??????Brown studied flying at Harlem Field in Chicago and trained with Black American aviation expert Cornelius Coffey. In 1935, she earned her aircraft mechanic's license from Curtiss-Wright Aeronautical University. Brown later earned her private and commercial pilot licenses. Five years later, she earned a ground school instructor's rating, certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). ??In 1940, Willa Brown and Cornelius Coffey collaborated to establish the Coffey School of Aeronautics, which aimed at training Black American pilots. The Coffey School of Aeronautics trained hundreds of students that went on to become Tuskegee Airmen. ??In addition to her dedication to education, Brown passionately advocated for the inclusion of Black American pilots in the Army Air Corps, the federal Civilian Pilot Training Program, and the aviation industry. ??In 1942, she attained the rank of Lieutenant in Civil Air Patrol Squadron 613-6, making her the first Black American officer in the organization. After the war, she remained committed to aviation advocacy and education. ??This snapshot showcases the extraordinary accomplishments of Willa Brown, whose steadfast dedication to education and equity in aviation inspires generations. #ByAirBySea
