Paul Neyman and I had a chance to sit down with Liam Eves, a clinical research executive and thought leader, to talk about the groundbreaking opportunity presented by generative AI for the clinical trial industry in general and specifically for patient recruitment. Patient recruitment currently constitutes 30% of the study length, 55% of study terminations are due to slow recruitment, 80% of clinical trials are delayed due to insufficient enrollment, the majority of research sites fail to recruit a critical mass of patients, and each day of delay costs sponsors $600K in lost revenue. In addition, the number of clinical trial starts per year has steadily grown from 2,000 in the year 2000 to 40,000 in 2023 while the US adult population pool has stayed the same at 4%. And here is another trend. As clinical research focus shifts to precision medicine, it becomes harder to find participants who fit increasingly selective criteria. For example, finding eligible trial participants is far more challenging for oncology trials, where 4x more candidates have to be screened per study-completing patient compared to non-oncology trials.
