Reflections on ICIDS 2024 and ARDIN part 2
Continued from previous post 2/2 We keep developing ICIDS and this year’s innovation was the integration of workshops into conference days, with the intention to break up long conference days with activities and assure a larger audience for the workshops. From what I have seen myself and from the feedback I heard, this change has worked well, and we will continue in this way in the future. Last year’s innovations – the full day ARDIN Emergent Scholars’ Academy and the introduction of the category of Late Break Work – have already become a stable of ICIDS and will continue as well. Going to a Global South country for the first time seemed like a risk, especially since a US travel warning kept some participants away, also because getting travel funding under these circumstances is more difficult. Yet, the decision paid off big time due to a big Colombian participation in combination with a fully hybrid conference where online attendance is viable option. I think everyone who attended will agree that Colombia has not only charmed us but also extended our horizon with new influences and new collaborations in the future. Also, ARDIN keeps developing. After five years, the Executive Board was due for reelection and I’m very humbled and happy that I as president as the well as my wonderful colleagues Lissa Holloway-Attaway, Frank Nack, and Alex Mitchell have be re-elected for another five year term (ágnes Karolina Bakk PhD joined the executive board in 2022 and was not due for re-election). At the same time, Maria Cecilia Reyes, Jonathan Barbara, and Mattia Bellini have been elected to the General Board and represent the next generation which will help carry ARDIN into the future. Right on their heels is the graduate student committee, which under the leadership of Anca Serbanescu will organize the first ever ARDIN Graduate Symposium next year. ARDIN is a thriving organization and you will hear about more initiatives very soon. Yet, for now, let’s celebrate one more time the achievement of ICIDS 2024 while looking forward to a new year and ICIDS 2025 in Malta! Hartmut ARDIN President

Long post 1/2 It’s been a whirlwind since ICIDS 2024, but it’s finally time to reflect on a great ICIDS and the development of ARDIN - Association for Research in Digital Interactive Narratives. The 17th iteration was another great one, one of the best in my opinion – the quality and extend of papers meant we again filled two volumes, and the ARDIN emergent scholars’ academy (the ICIDS Doctoral Consortium) had a record number of attendees from countries as far as Thailand and Turkey. Overall, the conference had 110 attendees from 26 countries, many of them from Colombia. It is also a great sign of the vibrance and attraction of the conference that more than 70% of participants were new to ICIDS and equally great that there was near gender parity (46.8 % identifying as she/her and 48.6 % identifying as he/him, with the remaining 4.6 percent identifying as different variants of genders). A big part of the success was the stellar Barranquilla organizing team, led by Maria Cecilia Reyes, but there are so many others that made this ICIDS such a good one: local chair Juan Pablo Osman who always had the right answer to any issue, Gabriela Patricia Mu?oz Barrios who co-curated an outstanding art exhibition in the beautiful university museum space, and social media manager Sebastián Florez who helped create the best social media presence ICIDS ever with interviews and daily recaps on our new Instagram channel as well as virtual chairs Andrea Cancino Borbón, PhD and Jonathan Barbara who facilitated a fully hybrid interactive experience on Zoom in addition to a YouTube stream. All of this happened in collabration with many student volunteers, who were always available when needed. The were joinged by program co-chair John Murray, art exhibition co-chair Mark Marino, workshop co-chairs Paola Harris Bonet and Christian Roth as well as doctoral consortium co-chairs Cláudia Silva and myself. It truely takes a great team effort to create an ICIDS conference! In this regard, we must also not forget the gracious support by Universidad del Norte whose outstanding facilities made this experience possible. We keep developing ICIDS and this year’s innovation was the integration of workshops into conference days, with the intention to break up long conference days with activities and assure a larger audience for the workshops. From what I have seen myself and from the feedback I heard, this change has worked well, and we will continue in this way in the future.
