The 31st ILGA World Conference in Cape Town brought together 1,450 delegates from more than 100 countries in a showcase of global solidarity for LGBTI rights and acceptance under the theme "Kwa Umoja We Rise". Co-hosted by South African organizations Iranti and Gender Dynamix, the five-day event marked the largest gathering in ILGA history and the first to be held on African soil in 25 years. Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, the culmination of Trans Awareness Week and an important day to honor the lives of trans people lost to violence and systemic oppression around the world. As Outright International's Rikki Nathanson shares, “It is during this time that we bring some dignity and honor to the names of our fallen siblings. The stigma, systemic violence, and lack of respect for autonomy that trans people face globally is heartbreaking. We need governments to recognize our identities without barriers.” There is no question that trans people are being targeted and scapegoated in the US and around the world, and their human rights and even their right to exist are under attack. Yet they are also surviving and in many cases flourishing in communities everywhere, and we must witness both. In addition, we should recognize that attacks on trans people actually harm everyone, and that we all benefit from the expansion of gender norms and the opportunity to create our own lives and societies that value safety, inclusion, and freedom. Allies, this is a critical moment for us to stand with our beloved family, friends, and neighbors and with trans leaders and organizations whose activism is desperately needed, growing and achieving significant progress across the globe.
